I have asparagus of three different ages, but the season is quite short and a large bed is tied up for the year. It is beautiful asparagus, not a lot of work and I am quite proud of it, but is it worth it to commit all this space to this crop? Who else grows asparagus and what do you think?

Hi cherry. I don't grow asparagus but if you like it then it is obviously worth the effort and space. I'm not too keen on spinach but I used to grow it for my MiL. That had to be relegated to the allotment as it took up so much space.

I don't have the space to grow asparagus Cherry but I do like to eat it. I know from when I visit my daughter that there are growers of asparagus in Norfolk where you can buy direct from them (I bought some last year and it was delicious). What would you use the space for if you stopped growing asparagus?

Peony, I am running out of space because of the strawberries and raspberries taking up 3 raised beds. I have 6 and I am really keen on the soft fruits now. These leave me only room around the edges for spinach (which I love Sweetpea)and salad leaves. The asparagus takes up 1 whole bed. The beans and some blueberries are sharing a shrub border. Of course, the rhubarb and zucchini need space. I don't think I can handle much more really. I am feeling a distinct lack of energy and time now as I have to share myself around aeroplane people, etc. Peony, I can buy asparagus here as it is grown in Southery. I can get rough stuff and neat bundles, so I should take that into consideration. I do want some advice as to whether it is really worth keeping.

Hmmm, if it takes up a whole bed, i would consider letting it go, you could grow more soft fruits in the bed instead.

I wonder if I have made my mind up and I am just looking for an excuse. When they start leafing up, the ferns are 4 ft high and need supporting. Are you there steve? You must grow asparagus.

Sounds like you have already made your mind up Cherry, if you are doubting whether it is worth it I do have 2 crowns but they are only 3 yr old and I have left them to build up reserves so far, mine are in too small a space anyway which goes for most plants in my garden

When the time is right for lifting it, it must go to a new home. I think I am getting a fruit cage for Christmas. I have hinted loudly and I will need the space for the fruit.
