Wow, that's a lot steve , they still look quite young, hope they make it but it's a lot for the parents to keep an eye on isn't it. We were driving down the main road here today & a duck with what looked like about seven tiny ducklings was crossing the road! I think she'd made it over & was dithering whether to go back but she went away from the kerb, I hope she led them up the nearby side street although whichever way she went she'd have a long walk to find water! I wanted to stop but O.H. said we were in traffic & she'd seen the danger, people were slowing down so I hope they were all O.K.

Quite a few years ago, some mallard ducklings were crossing the A10 behind their mother. The engineer was horrified to see Mother duck run over and the ducklings running around her not knowing what to do. Some more were run over so he called a vet friend nearby who came and took away those which were left and put them on her pond. The nest was right next to the road and nowhere near water.

There were no little bodies on the road Cherry when we came back that way in the afternoon so I'm telling myself they were fine. The duck looked like it may have come from domestic stock originally as it was a beige colour, not a mallard which we do get around here. Where it was crossing was only a couple of doors away from the Animals in Distress shop which is the local animal shelter so if someone went in there they would have been able to phone the sanctuary & get someone to pick them up.

That's good Sue. I am very fond of ducks and had a pet Muscovy for years until a dog got it when we moved to the north of Scotland. I was really upset. It sat on a Stonehenge I had made for it outside the kitchen window. They are very quiet, so it did not make a noise. It trained all the pups by pecking them if they annoyed it. Its name was 'Duckie'. Isn't that original?
