Well it will be when it`s finished. This has been a bit of a pain as the garden slopes down from left to right and back to front, a lot of cutting and filling .I tried to do it with out the wood frame but couldn`t get it levered. Any advise from here on would be welcome . I might have a problem keeping the soil in at the front edge of the wooden surround. And I`m wondering how to cope with the sides of the steps, what to put there .? how to shore the soil up ? I`m planning to lay slabs onto quarry dust , and use grey stones to fill the gap between them and the wood. any tips on how to make the slabs not wobble ??

I was speaking to Graham, he said the shuttering around is a good idea! When i laid a patio at my old old house, i had levelled the ground and tread on it so it was well compacted then i put a layer of sand/cement down. laid the slabs then watered them in so to speak, it lasted 17 years! Graham said too that maybe if you really pack in the soil around the edges and really compact it, that might work or add extra cement down the sides?
Hope that helps, i am sure someone will come up with a better solution than we have!

Thanks Rosie . The wood frame and steps are there to stay. I got the quarry dust and slabs quite awhile ago, thinking now that sand/ cement would have been a better idea . I plan to fill the steps with compacted soil topped with small stones i have done that before and it has worked well. I wonder if addding cement to the quarry dust would work, i have a ton of it, quarry dust i mean.

How far have you got now Ladybird? finished moonlight . I`ll post a pic when I can find my camera . It looks ok but I was rather disappointed with the eventual size. I thought I could plonk the small table and chairs in the middle, have a small fire pit crackling away in one corner and perhaps a barby in another corner, not to mention all the lovely planters and pots that I imagined would line the edges

If you want to put in a fire pit / chimenea and bbq you have the abilities, and space to do so.

That is lovely ladybird. I must have missed this before. Like you say, when the planting is established, it will be a quiet, secret scented corner of the garden.

Actually it`s just 2.3 meters daitheplant , but it is the size that rests on the eye easy . My brother put the temp steps of slabs on , they are a bit "moving" , so I will have to rethink that . Also the table is rusting and seems a bit "high" looking out from the back door so might make a low wooden corner seating area and a low table. The gabion wall is crying out for climbers and I can invigage some kind of "curtain" hanging high along the right side to block out the neighbours, lots to think about ......... but it will have to wait now untill next year all ideas welcome .
