Well they look like good friends Cool, you've made me realise how I miss seeing them now I'm not in the Fens. Magnificent big bugs. Their eyes are really awesome. We have oodles of grasshoppers - they keep crawling in the open window, over the ceiling, and dropping onto the bed at night. Urgh. Don't know if I'm harbouring a plant they love without knowing it, or something! They're a nice colour but I don't like them, I never know where they're going next when they bounce even the cats are dubious of them.

Thanks - I was lucky to spot them. Has anyone else got oodles of butterflies around at the moment? I can't count them all! Peacocks, Small Tortoiseshells, Gatekeepers, some other plain brown ones, lots of large and small whites, and one tiger moth. The Peacocks and small Tortoiseshells are vying for space on my 'Roxy' Dahlias. They're very popular with bees, too.

Our garden has been swamped by butterflies for the last 2 weeks Geranium, mostly small & large whites, lots of peacocks & the odd gatekeeper, small tortoiseshell, one red admiral, one meadow brown & speckled woods. Oddly we've only had one comma & no holly blue or orange tips so far this year though. I think they all suffered in the cold spring & are 'making hay while the sun shines' now! I've been putting my sightings on the 'Big Butterfly Count' website, you go out for 15 mins. & count all you see during that time.It finishes this weekend but you can put backdated results on for July & August if you made any notes. Thanks, SueA, I was gong to do that. I try to do it every year, like the bird one. Must do it today! I've only seen one Red Admiral this year so far and no Painted Ladies. Is the plain brown one a 'Meadow Brown' do you know?

Yes Geranium , it looks like a male meadow brown on the left of your pic. & a female on the right, I had a male on it's own recently. Not seen any painted ladies here this year either & only the one red admiral on it's own, we usually have a lot of commas too but only one so far, I suppose some have been winners & some losers ths year.

Quite a few butterflies here but I need to refer to the book to know what they all are.

Me too, sweetpea. Thanks, SueA. I must tell you about the Red Admiral which has been around for a while. I've been trying to get a photo, and yesterday would have been a perfect opportunity except that he sat still - on a pile of fresh doggy-doo-doo! I just laughed and cleared it up when he flew away.

I've had lots of butterflies too in the last couple of weeks, mainly Peacocks (I counted 12 on my buddleia at one time!), a few gatekeepers and lots of whites, and a couple of very pale lemon/cream coloured ones.

had to rescue one from the g'house this morning, what I tend to call a red admiral although it probably isn't!

Eugh! A peacock butterfly landed on my t-shirt the other day in the garden, hope it didn't have the same dining habits! sweetpea , I have to look up lots of the various brown/orange, gatekeeper, meadow brown, copper butterflies to make surewhich I've seen as a lot of them look the same & some never seem to stay still long enough to get a good look at them. I was showing my mum-in-law a photo of one of our peacock butterflies & explaining the 'eyes' on their wings are a bit like those on a peacock's tail as she said the only ones she recognises are cabbage whites & red admirals.
