In Victoria they are called March flies and they come out at the same season as here.

They can land on you without you feeling anything and the first you know is that stinging sensation. not seen any round here touch wood

We have them and the thunderflies started yesterday. I haven't seen any up here Cherry, I have noticed thunderbugs for a couple of weeks now, lots of crops are being harvested though so i guess thats the reason.

I didn't see or hear the horsefly - but then, I get bitten by all sorts of critters without seeing them. My leg is bright red from ankle to knee, but not painful any longer, thank goodness.
