We had the pleasure of the woodpecker sound in woods today but could not see it.

We have quite a few here and last week I saw my first ever Greater Spotted Woodpecker which is meant to be a shy bird. It was eating the fat balls in the dog kennel near the house. This was quite spectacular.

I've never seen one, Cherry. We've had a lesser spotted one a couple of times, and a pair of green woodpeckers visit the lawns on occasion. I think they like ants.

Not long ago we had this little fella visit our garden, had to be very quick with camera, and last weekend we had a Kestrel land on the pruned apple tree, didn't have camera to hand.

That's a great photo! Here's one of the pair of green woodpeckers in the back garden. I couldn't get any closer.

We have a greater spotted woodpecker visit every day. He always goes for the fat balls first and then has a peck at the nut feeder.

That is the one Les. It was quite spectacular as the colours were so distinct and strong. Pretty thing. I had only seen the ordinary woodpecker once at my last abode and they are here in force.

We are very lucky to have a pair of Greater Spotted woodpeckers visiting the fat balls daily. They were very shy to begin with but are as tame as most of the others now.
The biggest treat is when they bring their young to the feeders. The young fly in and land on the fat balls but have no idea how to take off again so they simply let go, fall to the ground and take off from there. It is very comical to watch.

We had something similar last year when the parent bird was teaching the youngster, three times the parent flew from the ash tree to the feeder while the young bird watched, then it had a go, missed, landed in the flower bed, and had to hop out onto the wall before taking off. But the parent persisted and finally the youngster got it right, but as WF said once on the feeder it didn't know how to get off and dropped to the ground. We also have green woodpeckers which land on the lawn and peck out the ants. Lovely birds

I wonder why that one only appeared here once? I'd love to see him again. You're very lucky!
