Thought I would just post some photos from my visit to Wisley yesterday. Have to say I did not think the show was very well organised. I appreciate that judging has to be done but keeping the public out until mid day was, in my opinion, a bad plan. Trouble was once they did open the tent there were so many people around it was very difficult to get anywhere near the blooms for quite some time. Maybe next year judging could be until 10.30, then NDS members until midday and then the general public. Still, there were some cracking blooms there and worth the trip up from Cornwall. Congratulations to all the winners. Attachment Deleted

Congratulations to all the winners. With respect, if as an exhibitor you had just spent the last 8 months growing your blooms with the view to putting up the best possible vase or vases at a national show the last thing you would want is the general public poking and prodding them about before they are judged. Most big shows including Shepton Mallet when it was held there did not allow people in to view until after judging was completed. I too was at wisley yesterday, very hot and extremely humid in the dahlia marquee. To the point condensation was dripping down from the roof onto the blooms below. Many were spoilt as a result. All the judges were told to allow for front damage due to this reason. 40 degrees in a humid marquee meant many a good exhibit dropped before judging, what a shame as there was some good stuff there.

Sorry my post posted before I had chance to finish. I was not suggesting that the public were allowed in until judging had been completed.

Congratulations to all the winners. If my memory serves me right Frankie Fraser from Glasgow one the Individual Championship, Dave Spencer was 2nd, Phil Watson was third. Dave Gillam pulled his entry as his Challengers all were oversized. Excellent vase of Marston Lilac in Frankie Frasers championship I think took best or runner up best vase in show. Dave Spencer won the Miniature Dec 'Championship' Les Jones won the Large Pom - 'Championship' Midlands won the Society 'Championship'

Hi I do grow and exhibit so know what it was all about. So why would you want a tent full of people when your exhibits are still being judged ?

I was not suggesting that the public where in the tent when exhibits were bring judged. You have totally misunderstood my comment.
I was expressing the view of a number of people that I spoke too including NDS judges who thought it was badly organised.
Were you exhibiting yesterday?

It's difficult to balance the needs of judging with an opening time as you don't know how long judging will take. Also the marquee looked to lack space meaning that even a relatively small amount of people make viewing difficult. This happens at our local shows - and the Welsh National - at opening time, then things usually quieten down after the initial rush.

You are right markb - I guess the issue for me and for those that I spoke with was that we had driven a long way the night before and had to leave Wisley at 2pm to drive back home and therefore did not have as much time as would have liked. It was very squashed. Still maybe they will find a better venue next year.

I was speaking to phil watson last night and he said he would have been a lot closer in the individual but for the heat. Two of his leopold chloe dropped there petals and his marys jomanda blew there centres.Saying that he said he still did'nt think he would have beaten frankie fraser. He said it was unbearable in the marquee with the heat and the crowds.

If they are dropping petals that quick will there be any blooms left by the end of the show !!! Sounds as if a rethink on the venue may need to be considered if judges have to make allowances for judging. If I'd have known I've got plenty of front damaged blooms I could have entered
