Hello everyone,
I need advice please, I'm new to greenhouse gardening. I have a new 11' x 13' greenhouse, my first and I'm thrilled. As the cooler nights will be approaching I have been looking at electric heaters. I already have two propagators. As I intend to have some seedlings potted on and geraniums kept from this summer I guess I should keep it at 6 oC - 8 oC?? Can someone suggest a good heater. I have been educating myself on the web and some are so expensive. They have different wattage and cover various areas. I won't be keeping exotic plants.

Welcome to the forum Sunshine. I cannot recommend a heater, but with a greenhouse that size, if you are going to use a electric heater you would need a 3 kilowatt to keep it frost free.

Do you mean that a 3kw will only keep it frostfree, not heated to say 7oC My greenhouse is 10ftx6ft and my heater does 10 centigrade no problem that is the maximum I want but will go higher if needed. I think a 3 kilowatt would reach 7c easily enough at that size. If you do not need the whole greenhouse in winter you could divide it off with bubble wrap and heat half of it saving money.

I would agree with Tel. Make sure it has a thermostat so you can set it to go no higher than 50'f. You'd need a maximum /minimum thermometer to set it to. My cheap Argos heater does the job nicely.

Thank you Scrumpy. I already have a max/min thermometer. I have been buying bits and pieces all along.

If you want to look at this linkthis will give you some ideas as to staging. No need to spend a fortune on proper stuff with a bit of simple DIY.

Thank you, this has given me a lot to think about. Hubby was thinking of making homemade timber staging, everything helps to keep the cost down.

Silly question Sunshine why do you wont it heated to 7 degrees [/quote]Hi Leslie, As greenhouse gardening is new to me I looked for info on my computer. I read that to keep geraniums alive during winter and for protection for young summer bedding plants during February, It would need to be kept at 7oC. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Sunshine, I also have a large g/h 10x8 which I've only had for the last 3 years, I bubble wrap mine when it starts getting cold but I also have a heater so if it drops below 5 it comes on, last year I did the same and never lost any thing. I had lots of things growing geraniums fuchsia and I also started my seeds of early. Where in the country are you based ? I'm south.

Hi Lesley, Thanks, that's very encouraging, the fact you never lost a thing is great. As this is my first winter in the greenhouse I'm a bit nervous.I live in southern Ireland, it can get very cold here. Maybe you could help me with another query. I have a digital max, min thermometer/hygrometer. What is a safe reading on both for the greenhouse. The temperature I have a fair idea about but the other not a clue.
