somehow with all the upheaval here at home I seem to have missed this thread. just managed to have a look and I agree with the others, it looks a wonderful place to be at. i must have missed something so I don't actually know where it all is. At a guess, Madeira but perhaps someone can enlighten me. the only thing about a good holiday is having to pack up and leave, so sad.

Well, it didn't, and his front is decently covered by the fish he's holding! Do you want to see any more photos or are you bored with my holiday snaps?

OK, I'll carry on then. You might have seen Monty Don's programme when he visited Isola Bella, the more famous island in the lake. image hosting 20mbThe Duke of Borromeo (he became a Cardinal) built an enormous, flamboyant palace on the island, and a garden around it. The shape of the whole thing was supposed to be like his barge - and from the air, I suppose it does. It has statuary all over it - so 'Joe Public' isn't allowed in many areas. I think Monty was privileged and was allowed everywhere. screen grabIsola Bella gets very crowded as you can see. The topmost statue is a huge unicorn, which was the symbol of the Borromee family. It pops up in every tapestry in the palace! The gardens are much more formal than those of Isola Madre. screen shot windowsEvery flight of steps is lined with terracotta pots. There are several levels - terraces - but you're only allowed on two of them. I suspect the authorities are worried about possible damage to the many statues, sadly. image hosting websitesI've never seen a variegated New Guinea Hybrid before - and what an enormous plant! print screen windowsThe parterre amused me - there was a notice telling everyone to 'keep off the grass'. The Duke kept white peacocks on the island, as he did on Isola Madre. They were kept well away from us, though. On the lower terraces, there were avenues of Citrus fruits of all kinds. greenshotSo many terracotta pots everywhere - it must be a gargantuan task to water them all! I thought this Hydrangea was wonderful. screen capture freewareMore of the formal planting. screen caphow to use print screenSome great colour combinations! how to print screen on pcI've got this purple Salvia. windows screenshot toolI think Isola Bella is much more about the exuberant palace, and less about the garden, while Isola Madre is the opposite. I wouldn't want to spend a whole day on this island, although it's interesting. This last photo shows all the terraces - I think there are seven. People are only allowed on two - what a shame. screenshot program

Lovely pics Geranium. Its very "fairytale" isn't it. The New Guinea hybrid is very unusual. I've seen green and red variagations but not white and green...
