Started clearing away the SP plants as they are now finished. Still got some blooms on Gwendoline but the rain of late has finished most of them off. Even the seeds which I have been collecting have been sprouting in their pods due to the wet. Will be having to start the new season soon and get the pots cleaned ready. never a dull moment in the garden round here.

Can you just sow the sweetpeas that have sprouted or are they no use?

Can you just sow the sweetpeas that have sprouted or are they no use? I could rosie but as I didn't have any pots or compost ready they won't keep. I could have sowed them direct in the ground and they probably would have grown if they escaped the dreaded S & S. However I have enough seeds for sowing for my own needs and probably some extra to give away.

A lot of mine are still flowering, never had them this late before. If I'd looked after them instead of letting them set seed I could have made a fortune at our local florist....they sell them for £2 for 10 stems One more week of seed collecting, then I'll get them up.

Some of mine are hanging on too Scrumpy, but after this spell of bad weather i suspect they will be pulverised.

Mine gave up ages ago. I've sown new ones, and bought another packet of lavender coloured ones yesterday.

I've just planted my sweet peas, but I didn't know whether I should have soaked them first before planting them

With no bottom heat to help them along a bit about 2 weeks. With a little heat mine show in about 5-7 days.

I know lots of people say there's no need to soak them, but I do. Mine are all germinating with no bottom heat and they were sown on October 4th, so they took about 10 days to appear. I'll be moving them to the cold frame any day now.

Haven't sown any of mine yet. in previous years I used to sow 2nd week in October in cold frame. Since moving to S. wales with its milder climate I have found that brings them on too early so About now into early November is about right for me here. ps I never soak my seeds. I don't chip them now either as I find it difficult since my stroke but they still give good germination. No heat whatsoever, you want them to grow slow and steady. as soon as the shoots show through they are open to the elements, rain, sun, frost the only exception would be torrential heavy rain where there is a danger of them being washed out. Sweetpeas are perfectly hardy and I have had mine frozen solid for about 10 days while I was away and temperatures were at record lows. Didn't lose any. NEVER mollycoddle them
