Sorry about the subject heading, lets see if I can explain. My wife (Pat) and I have had a life insurance for a very long time, only to cover the funeral for each of us, well about a year ago we both got a letter from the insurance firm saying we are both fully paid up and after some phone calls to them they told us how much we would get, so off I go to our local funeral place and after a long talk with them we have gone for cremation and we both have decided to have our ashes scattered in the local woods were we walk our dog (Benji). Now I may have started a trend, as I have been talking to other dog walkers that use the woods and they are also considering this mad idea. Now the woods are a bit dull looking so how about some nice wiled flowers, can I just sprinkle some seeds around? I also have some French marigold seeds that I have saved. Should I sprinkle them now or wait till March, there are some daffodils growing there and a fair amount of stinging nettles. Any idea's. Reg

Reg, I don`t want to rain on your parade, but have you spoken to the woods` owner about your plans?

I have permission verbally, so far, but if not how will they get you to remove them. It's the seed scattering that I need to look in to. In one woods not the one I use, there are fairy doors pinned to tree's, not 1 but lots of them. They do strange things in the country side. PS. I'm not thinking of popping off just yet, got to get the woods looking nicer first, and I promise to say good-by.

French marigold being halfhardy will need a soil temperature of about 60F.so no point in sowing until about April outdoors at least and probably into May. As for me, i reckon I'm destined for the compost heap Not bothered about when i pop my clogs. Just the small matter of HOW.

Rather then sowing seeds in the wood itself Reg, why not start them at home and then transplant to the wood? That way you know they will succeed.

I'd also pick species adapted to the shade of woods caretaker. Buy a packet of Nettle-leaved Bellflower. It's a native woodland perennial (unlike French Marigolds) and will come back year after year (unlike French Marigolds). I agree with daitheplant in also maybe starting them off at home and planting some.
