This morning my daughter came running in with the news that our fishpond was empty and all the fish dead in a heap at the bottom. I went out straightaway and saw for myself. Every last one of our fish just in a pile at the lowest part of the empty pond. I turned on the hose to see if that would help and right away saw some signs of life in some of the fish so kept the hose on and utilised water from the water barrels too. It seemed that the stormy winds had displaced one of the outflow pipes from the filter and the water had disgorged into the pump shed instead of returning to the pond. The floor of the shed was thick with sludge and I had to do an emergency clean of the filter which is a messy job at the best of times. Anyway the death toll stands at five of the gold coloured fish with the possibility of more casualties to come. It was bad but could have been so much worse. I have no idea how long they were out of the water for and the pump was still running though no longer underwater. If it had been running dry for an exteded time I think it would have burned out but it seems to be working ok. I know some folks will think that it is only fish but they were our fish and our responsibility just as much as any other pets and thay all have different personalities or so it seems. Just hope that tomorrow won't have a further toll.

What a shame - I hope the fish left will make it, poor things. Fish are so beautiful to watch.
Sounds like your pump shed will need some hard work too... the wind was absolutely awful last night, we're very very sheltered so thankfully I only have a few pots and the bin knocked around.

What a nasty shock for you - I'm glad your daughter spotted it in time to save most of your fish. Our damage is minor - some branches off the ash trees, that's all.

Sorry to hear about your fish. They are living things and it's distressing when something bad happens them. I hope the surviving ones will be all right.

That is a great shame sweetpea. I went away during freezing weather and found that some fish had died during this cold snap, even though I had left a ball in the pond as advised. I was terribly upset, because these fish relied on me and would come for their food, etc. I don't think I could cope with a pond again. We would not have one here because there are deep drainage ditches within yards of the house. The ditches are all named too.

I hope the rest survive. Unfortunately, I was wrong about our damage - a large branch was split away from the trunk on the old damson tree - it was a real palaver to get it sawn off safely! If any more come down, they'll bring three clematis with them! My husband says there's an ominous split up there, too, which I can't see from the ground.

I know what you mean about the clematis Geranium. I have a Laburnum with a split down the middle, but value the Clematis macropetala which comes out before the leaves of the Laburnum.

Thats such a shame about your fish sweetpea we haven't had a huge amount of damage, one part of the pergola was blown off, but it was on the grass, and a frame has blown over squishing some dormant plants so real harm done.

Looks like another one gone. just been down to check all is well as bad weather forecast again and saw one floating on its side so probably a goner. Geranium, our laburnum died a death last year and after trimming some of the more dodgy branches I planted a clematis montana alongside and hopefully it will grow enough to cover what is left of the tree. no doubt the whole lot will come down some time in the future but it may outlast me so not my problem. gardening is full of surprises good and bad. Natural causes I can live with but things like vandalism I detest.

I wouldn't be surprised to find more branches down after the gales that are battering us at the moment!
