Had my best day yet catching earwigs. The old upside down pot with straw in really hits the spot. One pot had 'SIXTEEN' of the buggars in, 42 overall in 11 pots. They definitely prefer the pots placed around the large decs and semi-cactus's. I get real pleasure disposing of these pest. I know, I need to get out more

I need some advice on pot tubers. A lot of my pot tubers are now flowering, when I confirm the identity, do I cut them down and if so, to what height.

Once you have identified the pot tuber by the bloom, check the label is correct. No need to cut them down, just take off any future buds, so the plant can concentrate on making a good pot tuber. Give them a feed with tomato feed once a week.

Some growers on the forum are saying to give no feed at all....to build up the tubers.....which I personally, find strange. I would have thought it important to feed to build up the tuber for next season.....and you have confirmed this....

It's bud securing time for me pretty soon. Been cutting them back for quite a while, need to have them all done by next Wednesday. Going to be a few Sir Alf grown on wing buds, also some Bryn Terfel. Ridiculously early.

I've watched that video scrumpy, which is how I've been treating my pot tubers. Unfortunately is doesn't tell us when to cut back, and to what height. Thanks Tel for your advice, every bit helps .

Nature will do it for you. The only cutting back I do is in November.

To be quite honest, I stumbled across the method by accident. Many years ago when I decided to save a few pot tubers, I started off watering and feeding, but after a few weeks what with everything else going on, I kept forgetting to water. Eventually I gave up as I thought these look aweful. Come November time I was going to throw them away, but as I emptied the pot noticed I had a cracking tuber. So carried on that way ever since. Then I came across the video explaining the logic. I guess that by constant watering and feeding, you are encouraging it to flower,as with normal dahlias, before it forms the tuber later on.

Sometimes that's the best way to learn, trial and a bit more error . I saw the video last year when I wanted to learn more about growing dahlias. Watching Dave Gillam videos with Dave Spencer really helped me get a better understanding of the plant. Also I've got a good selection of books, although most have conflicting views on growing, so I try to pick bits from each, but the best advice I've found, is on this forum. But like everything in the gardening world, what works for one, doesn't work for the other, Trial and error again!!!

Just been reading on how Tel got Wildlifefriendly to her show and how the committee came to see if she had actually grown the dahlia's herself. Tel you should have written a book about it. Loved the banter on the dahlia section.

I am pleased you are reading our notes on dahlias. That is a wonderful story and completely true. I think my story about the only time I showed sweet peas is very similar, when I came third to two national exhibitors in our fairly large show. sweetpea took me every step of the way on the forum.

Loved the banter on the dahlia section. I really was chuffed to bits when she won with her dahlia's, I would have loved to have seen their faces when Wildlifefriendly walked off with 1st prize and their cup.
