Oh well, one has tried tried and better tried to upload pics onto here but to no avail!...Why is it so hard to upload pics ? easy peasy on facebook, never known anything as difficult as this site before....Anyways, todays news...Had a dozen giant mini plants delivered second week in june which hadn't been stopped.I stopped these plants myself & decided to hormone root the tops i took off to stop the plants, over these last few weeks they have all rooted and made great new mini plants. I had a good look at them this morning, the root ball was good, very good indeed. I have this afternoon decided to plant them in a fresh bed rather than leave em to make pot tuber, field tubers make better stock me thinks. Anyway because of the late planting, i am going to grow them just one up to perfection, just one giant dahlia per plant and then let em make good tuber...I may also protect the seed heads as well to give me seed stock for next season. Tis a shame about the photos, it needs to be made much easier, cause i have loads to show. Don't give up on the photos, you'll get there in the end.
Are you doing as an 'Add Attachment' directly into your posts? Once you have uploaded it, there is a button on the right which says (something like) Add attachment and then you have to confirm it. (I can't do screen shots for you because I've done too many and I'm over my limit. Managed to get 1 in my diary today and then now can't even get it to accept a 17KB file size. )

You really must use a "host" to download pics on the forum...tinypics or photobucket are your best bet burkey. Everyone gets there in the end!!its pointless trying to download direct to the site....we don't have the capacity....

I started loading images using 'Add Attachment' icon after someone suggested that I could do that. Does that mean that I shouldn't have done that? If I've done it wrong then I'm sorry. If I've taken up the capacity of the forum, I need to know because that's a awful lot of photos I need to delete. Like I said, I'm sorry. If I've spoilt it for other people then I'll sort it out.

Burkey, like the method you use for staking. I have been using pea netting but like the idea of the bamboo on the edges.

Need to check and tie labels on plants flowering now. These were spares put in close together for stock tubers and the magpies decided to collect the labels and pile them all up in a heap!
This afternoon I watched the Royal Welsh Show episode that was on BBC2 Wales on Monday evening at 7.30pm. Watched on iPlayer - the Chairman of the Welsh Dahlia Society had a small slot and also showed some of the dahlias on display. Worth a quick look for us dahlia fans.
This show will hopefully be my first of next season, though whether with dahlias, sweet peas, or vegetables we will see next year. Already booked the week of work though just in case!

You'll be up against Bev Chislett in the sweet peas. Think he won the 6 vase class there this year, plus a few others.
Anyway, back to dahlias and the annual thrip battle has started. Just as the buds are bulking up, a few of the early ones have got loads of them on em. Every year the same. Gave a good spray with Decis, will repeat in a weeks time, and pray.

My first year using Decis, I'm pretty impressed. I find you do have to spray every 5-7 days though.the wife bought me a new cooper sprayer for my birthday this year which has made life easier than the cheap old battleaxe of a thing I used to use.

No ones allowed to retire we need every one! We only put the polytunnel up this year so are growing outside, may try a few inside next year. I am hoping to have some ready for Sandy, but am not holding my breath. We should still go up even if we don't have anything to show, hope Stanley isnt growing as fast as the dahlias So you will be locking horns with Robin Day, he beat me by 3 points in the Sandy 'Dahlia Championship' last year. Nice guy and plus his girlfriend and my wife got on like a house on fire. If I recall she introduced herself to Marie by saying "So you are a dahlia widow too I see" Robin is top grower of mainly smalls, mediums and large. He won the 'Silverhill Trophy' at wisley last year for two vases of Large semi cactus.

I bought myself a 12L knapsack sprayer, only about £20. Once you can get the damn thing on your back, it's pretty good. That 12L just about does my entire patch of 130 plants.

I've never shown sweet peas before, so I was thinking more the mixed vase in the Novice class. Will need to study the schedule properly and try to get a selection of things to take to the show to make the journey worthwhile. Just off to the allotment to spray my dahlias, noticing a lot of little caterpillars in the buds.

You'll have as good a chance of winning as people like Bev. He will be the first to admit that pea for pea, my sweet peas are better than his, and I'll be the first to admit that my neighbours, growing them for the first time, are better than mine. It really is all down to how you look after them. Far easier for 100 plants than 500.
I too spotted a few tiny "grubs" coming out of the buds when I sprayed. No idea what they are.
