I was going to (try and) keep one seedling this year (no additional bias based on the fact that it is the only Downham Royal seedling that I have) but I'm going to save this one as well.
This is Fred 6 A pretty cactus (happy to be corrected if I'm wrong and to be told that it is in fact a semi but it looks spiky to me) Totally different to my other Eastwood Moonlight seedlings. Whatever Dad thinks, this is going to be the my number 1 seedling this year. n.b. Not for one minute saying that Dad would say it was rubbish, what I mean is, I've decided to keep it before he has even seen it.
With the other one Fred 3 I liked it except the centre but when talking to Dad about it, he said that if grown differently (that whole disbranch / stop thing that goes totally over my head) (all my seedlings are grown straight up 'eau natural, no side shoot plucking etc.) that centre might be better and that out of all my seedlings, that would be the one that he'd give a 2nd year.

Don't you just hate it when your Dad or Mum are right and you're the the one that got it wrong.
Yep Dad was right.
Hay hoe
hmpf
but his Did make sense in the first place.
Also - he's not that fussed on my spiky seedling. Too early. I know he's right on that one as well.
Oh well, I'll explain a bit later.

Spiky Fred from different angles. I find the curl of the petal fascinating.

Fred Flump which Dad really quite liked when he saw it again today.
2nd bloom has a better centre than 1st. Bloom struggling from being unsupported with a heavy head of waterlogged petals.

I'm feeling a tad guilty because I've managed to sneak downstairs leaving, made myself a cuppa and come here, while the girls are upstairs playing sort of, I've asked them to write down all the nice things that they can think of that has happened / done this holiday & carry on cracking on with their library reading challenge. Feel very tired today, sometimes when I go to work or on 'holiday' holiday I write the girls little messages. This morning's one said our holiday is almost over...
Bit sad really. For reasons best known to herself Pirate decided to sit on the landinig and swirl her lego around, rummaging through and dropping them loudly back into her box when she decided that she didn't want a particular brick.
Feel sorry for Fairy whose bedroom is next door.
Would quite like to go back to bed right now. 1 big tired teddy bear that me right now - hope Fairy and I are not toooooooo tired and grumpy today.

Would quite like to go back to bed right now. 1 big tired teddy bear that me right now - hope Fairy and I are not toooooooo tired and grumpy today. I was ill after this. One minute I was updating here, the next minute I was upstairs being sick. Taken me 2 days to feel better not 100% but a lot better than yesterday. Had jobs that needed to do but one of the things that we found time for was a brief trip to another local village town show next to where we live. Then went straight to bed. Didn't even go and see my dahlias yesterday.
I wanted to go because they have some dahlia classes. There were no pom or ball classes and no giant classes. All the classes were ever 1 of 2 blooms with the exception of the last class of '3 of any other type of dahlia'. This show also had chrysanthemums where as my town haven't had any exhibits in the chrysanthemum classes. Maybe this year because it is a shame at our town show there are 8 classes one of which is for people who haven't won a chrysanthemum class before. There is a chrysanthemum trophy and silver medal available to be won if the judges felt that there was an exhibit worthy the ward. I'll be honest looking through the Halls catalogue I have been tempted about growing them but having seen them yesterday, nothing that I have seen has convinced me to have a go. Not that I have any room for anything else.

After going to the show yesterday, I have made a decision. Next year my focus needs to be on getting our front garden something to take a bit of pride in. It's pretty horrible right now, a few scrubs but a lot of weeds.
I am going to plant some dahlias and daffodils there, with an aim for a bit of pride in it rather than the sense of embarrassment I feel about it.
If I am good and I do get it to look good, I'm going to enter that other show but that's not my goal. The goal is to have a nice front garden.
Funny thing is, yesterday my family. They went round and looked and all 3 of them said the same thing. "One more show won't hurt to fit in" from HH mind you he's told me today that he has plans for me to win the Intermediate Cup next year.
So no pressure then.
HH has just walked in and said "...Your dahlias are looking nice there..." "You can see them now that you have put them in front of the greenhouse" and then followed it up with: "Hides the greenhouse a bit..." So there you go medicinal purposes only. They make the rest of the garden look less of an eyesore.

Went to the Horticultural shop today to get the helpsheets for the childrens classes and I wanted to photo the society handbook because I have lost mine.
Came away with a new copy.
The girls have been busy making their entry for the show on Sunday!
So this is in lots of ways our biggie, The Town show.
The children have had a practice go at making jam tarts and are following 2 different recipes, one each. This is the 3rd and final town show and it is the dahlia one. HH told me a while back that the children can't be doing their classes on the morning of the show they have got to be done in advance (like they are supposed to be). So that's what we've been doing. Today they have made Halloween masks and Christmas coasters and I've been humming 'We wish you a Wombling Merry Christmas...', I know that it is only just August but it is still August and August = Summer, so to make anything Christmasy seems bizarre. HH doesn't think that he can cope with Children stressing over their classes and me and my Dahlias.
Mind you unless something horrible happens Pirate is going to enter the Novice Dahlia class as there isn't a child flower class. I've told her that she mustn't enter the dahlia classes because if she wins she won't be able to enter the Novice classes in the future.
