Also whilst on the subject of Moonlight.
Eastwood Moonlight is the original, all the others are sports (or maybe sport of a sport - Don't know, I haven't read up on the Moonlight genealogy.)nb Lismore Moonlight is not a 'Moonlight' Moonlight if that makes sense.

Well I got there eventually in the end. No wonder you are proud of your dad, a Champion dahlia man, respect Moonlight. I'll tell him you said that. Why do you think I am always asking after your seedlings and Scrumpy had a Moonlight sport a few years ago. (I could have got muddled up on that one). If anyone here has a cracker come up be in Sweetpeas or dahlias or anything here, then I am always you all on.
Especially if you show it and it doesn't do as well as hoped in the seedling classes in particular - don't give up. If you believe in a seedling or a sport, you should keep growing it and showing it in appropriate classification classes. If it is a good variety then other people will start wanting to grow it. Judges make a judgement call on a particular vase (rightly or wrongly - it is their opinion of the day) but if it is a good variety, then other people will believe in it, grow it and show it. And win to.
If a dahlia doesn't do well in shows but you love it, still grow it.
After all who are you growing them for? (Everyone else's assessment could be are wrong. ) There is no shame on being a loved garden dahlia in itself.
More of Dad's dahlias would still be growing now, if he hadn't of stopped growing himself. That's why I've spent hours researching dahlias and chasing his old varieties.
As I've mentioned before Dad's growing his seedlings again......................
& well, I've got my
& I've got my fingers crossed for everyone else here . (Unless someone is up against one of my Dad's new seedlings in a show of course)
That said, my Dad is very fair and too honest.
He would say, May the best dahlia win.
Bring it on 'eh?

My Diary has become boring, too much about dahlias.
Girls have asked if they can plant their potatoes...

I have taken 4 cuttings from it so far. The others material was on the thick side, so I discarded those. Should get enough from the second flush though.

Frustratingly the decision was made to stop having a County dahlia society website and unfortunately, I have received no correspondence from them, so I can't say with 100% knowledge that I am correct for this year but judging on my notes and photos of last year, these are the classes for the Intermediate Cup. There are also a mini show either side of the main show where you can exhibit any number of entries for each class. Vases of 1 and 3 dahlias for the various sizes / types.
Intermediate Championship Class: 2 vases of 3 blooms.
Intermediate Classes: x3 vase of large /giant x3 medium x3 small x3 miniature x3 pom x3 collerette
1 entry per class
Last years show was the day after that massive rain storm, growers that don't have covers suffered big time. Consequently there was a lot less entries across the whole show itself. Even so, there were no entries in the pom class, 1 vase of medium, 2 vases of small, 2 vases of miniature and 2 vases of collerette.
The other intermediate class is a single vase of large / giant.
The dominant variety was Kenora Valentine which won the Intermediate Championship class itself, the x3 large / giant and single bloom of large / giant. The colour is absolutely stunning but not an option for me. So it is going to have to be, fingers crossed for Trooper Dan because there is no way I can get 3 good Sir Alfs on a single plant.
As I've already said, the heavy rain ruined a lot of plants, so I am sure that there would be a lot more entries but I am surprised at the poms with no entries. Maybe the intermediate growers like the challenge of perfect timing of a giant.
Who knows, I am hoping that I will manage an entry in the pom and miniature classes and maybe even the small. Realistically I don't think I can grow and show mediums. I think that they are too big for me but it would be wonderful to win with an Eastwood Moonlight. The giants that I'm growing are really for the rest of the family because they are in awe of the size.
Me, I'm happy with my Downham Royals and my Pirate. The Westons make me smile.
I pleased to say that my schedule has arrived for the County dahlia society. Both Dad & I had become a little concerned because it seemed to be a long time coming and had even began to think maybe they had dissolved the society.
(I am imaging an Eurovision scores style voice:) Here are the classes for the Intermediates, at the Annual show:Intermediate Championship Class: 2 vases* of 3 blooms of to separate classifications. (*Exception = giant & large can be exhibited in separate classes) Intermediate Classes: x3 blooms of large /giant 1 vase of x3 medium 1 vase of x3 small 1 vase of x3 miniature 1 vase of x3 pom 1 vase of x3 collerette
1 vase of 1 bloom giant / large hmmmm food for thought. 2 mini shows either side of the main show with Single bloom Vase & vase of 3 blooms in each of the following classifications: mini dec, small dec, medium dec, large or giant dec, giant cactus / semi cactus, large cactus / semi cactus, medium cactus / semi cactus, small cactus / semi cactus, mini cactus / semi cactus, small ball, mini ball, pom, any other section & seedling classes. I think that I did quite well (all things considered) at the mini shows. I got my Novice Cup so I was and still am happy. I won my cup and it has been engraved. Couldn't have wished for more. This year in the Intermediate classes, the biggie is the Intermediate Championship Class and there is also a bronze medal for best Intermediate exhibit. But I am not kidding myself with goals of those but it would be nice to get placed in 1 of the Intermediate classes. Again not a goal but well, something to have a crack at, well aim to have a crack at. :-)
So there you. If there is a plan, that's about as far as I can get right now. hmmmm got myself thinking now.....

P.S. Sorry to have been a tad quiet on the post front. Frantic family life pretty much taking over all. Still it has been good for you all to have a bit of a break from all that purple. Less wearing on the eyes.

Rang my Dad earlier and asked if there had been any signs of life from my tubers and I am very pleased to say that there is life from my Stallen Condessa and the Red Balloon. My understanding is that Stalleen makes a rubbish tuber, so I am pleased that it survived the trauma of me digging it up. I've got a funny feeling that Dad only had 2 Red Balloon plants and we had 1 each (Don't quote me on that one), so that is good news if that one is growing to.
So I am happy again, didn't like the state of limbo when other people have been having fun with their tubers.
Looking forward to April, I've got my tubers coming from home and away (US not Oz unfortunately, wasn't lucky on that search) and some extra special plants on their way to.
I've read today that some other people have started their seeds. Asked Dad, bit too early for me.
That's fine I can wait, now that I know something have started.
Tiny steps.
Had a mental image of 'Tiny Steps towards a very long wait at a bus stop.' ...Wait a long, long time for something to get the green light to grow and they will all arrive at once.
Time to stop. 'Night All.
Moonlight.
