We went to Marbury Nursery yesterday for a look around, it was lovely & sunny when we were there & there were lots of bees & hoverflies around. Haven't seen any bees in our garden yet but the rhododendrons at Marbury were covered with them, a couple of them had dived in head first & just lay there, if it hadn't been for the odd twitch & one rubbing it's legs on it's back you'd have thought they were dead!

Spotted the first bee in our garden today in the sunshine, I didn't manage to get a photo though & am not sure exactly what it was, definitely some kind of bumblebee, very dark with a white tail.

You're lucky peony , although it was very sunny today I only saw one red-tailed bumblebee in the garden- first one this year- & a shield bug, didn't spend very long in the garden though so I suppose there could be more around.

Found a poorly looking bumblebee on the back doorstep today, I offered it a capful of sugar/water solution but it wasn't interested so I pulled off a couple of crocus flowers & it clambered into one. It was trying it's wings out but couldn't get off the ground properly as if exhausted so I put it in a bumblebee box outside with the sugar solution to see if it recovers overnight, hope so but I think it might be too weak. I looked it up & it's a tree bumblebee, they sometimes nest in birdboxes.

Unfortunately the bumblebee didn't make it, it had survived the night & this morning had climbed out of the hole in the box so I moved it to the bowl of flowers on the patio table with a capful of sugar/water. It didn't drink anything but did keep climbing up the flowers & trying it's wings but this afternoon I found it dead on the floor, it must have tried to fly off but been too weak or ill & not made it.

Quite a few bees now evident round the hellebores and one of the cats is finding it great fun trying to catch one. it will find out the hard way if it does. So far two of the young cats have slipped into the pond and decided they are not too keen on water. Just like us when we were kids.
