Hi,
This is my first post. I've been into gardening since childhood and I'm quite good at recognizing plants and trees. But, we moved house a year ago and we have a tree and a shrub in our garden that I can't identify - and neither can my neighbour who is a member of the horticultural society.
Firstly, the tree. It is about 20ft high and is just starting to come into bloom with quite sparse tiny dark pink blossom. In the summer it has dense dark red/purple leaves. My neighbour seems to think it's a maple, but I didn't think they flowered. Surely, this means it's some form of fruit tree? Although, it's never had fruit on it. Searches on the internet suggest it may be a form of plum tree.
Second, the shrub. I have never seen another like it. It's about 3ft tall and grows in a 'spreading' fashion from the central stem so it ends up looking like a mini weeping willow. The leaves are small and bright green. It flowers in the summer with lots of little white flowers that extend down every branch. After flowering it forms little 5/6 pointed dark brown seed pods that look like star anise pods only much smaller - about 1cm from point to point. The seed pods don't fall off easily and often remain on the shrub until it flowers the following year. If you apply pressure on the pods they shatter into individual points, each containing a seed.
Any ideas???

Welcome to the forums missbecktoria and we will try to help. Look up Prunus nigra, both 'pissardii' and 'cerasifera' and see if this is the one you described. Your descriptions are very good and a photo would be even better, so you may like to try putting them on here.

Hi Cherry,
I think you've hit the nail on the head with prunus nigra. Not sure what variety it is; but, having looked at photos on the net, it is most certainly a variety of black/purple leaved plum.
Now, does anyone have any ideas on this shrub? I can provide photos, but it is only just starting to get leaves on it and the flowers won't appear for a while. It does still have seed pods on it so I could get a snap of that if people want to see?

If you can, do put a photo up missbecktoria. We have some clever gardeners on here and one who simply loves identifying plants, trees and shrubs, even when they are dormant.

Hi missbecktonia and welcome to the forum .The shrub sounds like Spirea Japonica or "Bridal Wreath" . It has a weeping form covered with little white flowers . i don`t know what the seed pods look like though .
