When I was deadheading my plant pots. Quite glad I didn't, I'm not 100% sure what type of Wasp it is, but it was looking pretty fierce and waving it's abdomen at me. It was right down within a heavily flowered primrose plant, so I expect it was all nice and warm and dry in the middle. Rather gorgeous

That is a very good close-up picture of the wasp Bess. I would think you were relieved that you did not rush to deadhead this pretty primrose.

What afab picture Bess, just as well you didn't grab it, I don't think the wasp would have liked that!!

Great photo Bess , it does look a big wasp, maybe it was a 'queen' one as they're the first to appear in spring & are bigger than the normal ones.

Looks more like a Hornet to me, nasty devils.

My husband wondered if it was a hornet, tbh I wish I knew a bit more about insects etc as they are pretty much the main wildlife I get on my patio garden - so trying to take a bit more interest!

We must have had a nest of hornets and could not find it. The windows had to be shut every night and they kept hitting the windows. If they got into the house, I had to turn lights off until they were attracted by the porch light and they would be dead by morning. I hate them.

I don't think it is a hornet as they usually have brown legs & more of a brown/yellow colouring rather than the black/yellow in the photo. The queen wasps are pretty big & they are just emerging from hibernation around now as the weather is warming up - in some places anyway!

I think we have two sorts of bumbles - orange and buff. Could this be right SueA? They are humming loudly when I walk through the rape.

There are lots of different bumblebees around Cherry , we've had red-tailed, buff-tailed, tree, & garden so far , there are a few that are ginger or have ginger 'rears' as well so those could be some of the ones you've seen.

There are some honey bees, but as my neighbour has not got hers yet, I am not seeing a lot. The bumbles make just as much noise. I have never seen a bumble bee nest. They must live somewhere.

Do you remember Cherry I had a bumblebee nest under my shed last year, they used an old wood mouse hole? I couldn't actually see their nest but they were in and out for months. I've seen lots of honey and bumble bees around the garden recently so I've been keeping a watch for any nests but I don't suppose they'll use the same place again.

It is coming back to me peony. I have holes appearing under the hedge and I have wondered.
