My son has a fourth floor flat in Aberdeen facing the harbour, so I think that would be east south east. He is on the fourth floor, and has a balcony so small it is called a 'Juliet' balcony (no room for Romeo!). Now for the hard part, he wants a low growing tough shrub, preferably evergreen. He did say it has to be available locally from a garden centre and definitely tough. I think in summer it could be sunny in the morning. Please give him some ideas.
I know a pot of herbs will be included because his partner is a good cook.
Another text has arrived saying he fancies heathers. I just love heathers. These are smaller than I had in mind, but what do you think?

Potentilla fruticosa Primrose Beauty ( Rosacea ) Not evergreen, but would do well on a balcony in a pot.

One of the short bamboos might be suitable Cherry, my taller Phyllostachys grow in complete shade, and I have a shorter one that is grown in a pot which only gets late sun

Sarcoccocca humilis, evergreen, winter-flowering and highly scented. If he just wants spring/summer flowering then any azalea japonica.

These are all good suggestions and my son will read this and look them up. Short bamboo sounds interesting as long as it doesn't want more room than a pot. I can give him Sarcococca humilis and possibly the Azalea could work because it would share the soil with Heather. It could be an expensive mistake if it doesn't grow well. The Potentilla would be different. I would never have thought of that, but with small leaves it could take the wind. Thank you and don't stop there. Some other ideas might be put forward.

How about Skimmia Japonica, it's tough, likes acid soil so would go with heathers and would have flowers too.

Thanks Rosie. Son will read these selections and see what he can get at the local garden centre or B@Q or wherever.

First thought was a hydrangea. They grow well in pots and are pretty rugged and have large flowers.

He hasn't bought them yet because gypsies have set up camp on the lawn in their view and he won't go out there and draw their attention. He is going to get his Heather and probably a Hosta and I have forgotten what else.

Oh dear, the travelling folks are causing a lot of bother, they leave behind so much mess and they wonder why no one wants them where they stay.
