What hedging plant is it as there are about 5 million plants that can be used as a hedge. If it is the common privet then you can chop it back as much as you like same with Pyracantha. Some other hedging plants are holly, Lonicera nitida, Lavender, Forsythia, Beech/Hornbeam, plus the other 4,999,995 that I haven't the time to type out. Bees are not a problem and should be encouraged plus they are a protected species I think. One point to note - this is nesting season so check there are no nests in the hedge prior to cutting it.

Sweetpea I think its the common privet which is in the front of the house So Ill have to wait till the bees have gone before I get it cut then I only need it chopped at the top and tidied at the sides

Any bees will most likely be underground near the roots unless you have flowers on the privet which is unlikely at this time of year. They won't bother you when trimming the hedge. You didn't say what kind of bees they were. I assume one of the bumble bees as honey bees will most likely be from a nearby hive.

Joysie, if you have bees, then the plants flower. Also, may I suggest, you DO NOT want your hedge cut badly, you want it cut properly. May I ask, what area do you live in?

joysie21 I know you live in Portsmouth, but did not know it is Hilsea. My husband was brought up in Battenburg Avenue, North End, near Ophir Road bus stop. I always pictured you in a new area which were navy quarters, but I was wrong. Hilsea is very nice.

Back to square one the hedge is over 5ft high now and very untidy the family of four adults next doors in a rented house said they would cut it but they havent I get fed up sweeping the frontage as they dont What do you suggest I thought of getting a trellis planter to devide the frontage of the houses (as its terraced ) but they are £80 and ive just had a lot of expence with my car

You could see if you could get hold of the landlord who cut it last time joysie21 but other than that all you can do is keep your hedge looking really tidy & hope you can shame them into cutting theirs. Where we used to live there was a gap in the fence at the front of the houses which sounds like what you have & I blocked it with an enormous pot (you could use a plastic one or a fake or real half barrel) with a big fatsia plant in which did stop a lot of the rubbish blowing straight in from next door.
