Hello. I have to window boxes and water them once a day. We put extra holes in them and used john innis compose. But the water doesn't run out the bottom. I'm worried the roots will rot. I'm new to gardening and I'm so pleased with them. Do you think they will be okay. The soil feels wet don't want to over water them.

Are the holes in the bottom of the boxes or the sides?

They are in the bottom.

I didn't realise you could put holes in the side. They are plastic boxes. Is it to late to put more holes in? Would it harm the plants. They are very full with flowering dahlias. They are so pretty wouldn't want to lose them.

You may not need to water every day. do the finger test to see if it is dry below the surface.

As Tel suggest, if the compost is wet don`t water. I think perhaps they are not draining because you are not giving them a lot of water. If the plants look healthy I wouldn`t worry too much.

I did the finger test tonight and soil felt moist so didn't water. Except for the hanging basket. Plants are looking good I really like this garden hobby. Never thought I would in a million years. I could never understand why people spend hours in their garden.

That is the issue isn’t it? Some people might not be able to understand, until they actually try your hands at it – and now it has you hooked. You would have probably never in a million years thought that you would be concerned about the dampness of soil before you started!
