Moonlight, this year I've been using a product called SB plant invigorater. It's a systemic insecticide which the little critters cannot get immune to. I spray once a week, and as yet I've not had one instance of farming or disease being passed on. If you look on LBS buyers guide website you will be able to read about it. I use 5 litres a week, so I buy the litre bottle, which makes 500 litres, so should last me about 3-4 seasons. I think that I am being dense but I can't find SB Plant invigorator - do you mean this? linkTry this link Moonlight, www.lbsbuyersguide.co.uk/sb-plant-invigorator.html

Thanks Ian, I puff diatom around the bottom of my plants, but never on them as I wasn't sure if it would affect them. Will get out there later and do the stems as well. What with my upturned pots and diatom I'll cut back the earwig population . Oh, by the way, welcome to the forum..
Mark Can anyone find me a link showing whether or not diatom is harmful to plants? Or comfirming that it is safe to use on dahlias?
Searches keep showing results on chicken protection and fish tanks.
Thanks, Dad is interested in finding out more... Try this link Moonlight, we've been using it for ages with the chickens and I've been using it this year as a barrier, but have now puffed it on the base of my dahlias after Ian's post. www.richsoil.com/diatomaceous-earth.jsp

I can see the benefit of ant powder around the base to prevent the harvesting of blackfly. As to earwigs being a gardeners friend, what do they actually do apart from aim straight for the growing point of dahlias to do as much damage as they can? Regarding slug it, if it works for Ian then who are we to argue. I can't see how mixing metaldehyde in the way he does can be dangerous, as the normal way of using it would be as a drench over plants, so what difference does it make if sprayed with a fertiliser? Actually, earwigs eat aphids as well as pollen mite. Unforunately, when they eat the pollen mite, they tend to tear the petals as well. Hence the Vaseline. Ian, you didn`t answer my question, HOW does using ant powder prevent earwigs? Scrumpy, mixing Slugit with fertiliser is absolutely stupid. You only need to treat the plants with Slugit once a season.

Never used it (slug it) so I wouldn't know. How does it last a season on plants?

It is absorbed by the plant and stays active for at least 6 months, and trust me, it works. Mixing it with fertiliser and spraying everyday, though. Will damage the plants. That is overkill.

So how would you use it. Spray or watering can? Also, should it be used when there is minimum leaf or when the plant is well established.

Now then once and for all. I never said I spray slugit as you said "every day" David. I suggested that whilst spraying on your routine spraying programme you may want to spray once with slugit however if it rains shortly after spraying you will have to re apply. Now I have used ant powder on the base of my plants for a number of years and I have very little problems if any with earwigs. By the way I am very successful with my Dahlias. Oh and I know what I am talking about David. Good night and hope the earwigs don't bite. Hope you have a successful season. I think now the subject has been exhausted now cheers, Ian
