Daitheplant. Just one last thing on this subject Permethrin is the active ingredient in Nippon ant powder and it controls ants & earwigs for up to 6 months (in the house or dry places) people ask me is it good for ant and earwigs and I say no it kills them Hehe. Anyway good night sleep tight. PS trust me I know it works or as you say I know what I am talking about. By the way who has time to spray every day very strange and yes that may have an adverse effect on the plants

That's what I like to see forward planning before this years shows. Well from seed is anybodies guess what you might get unless you can get a new variety from a raiser. Just grow what you like and you can manage. Barbarry Kesteral is worth trying Miniature ball (Plum), Blyton Golden Girl miniature dec (Yellow)Clearview Daniel Miniature Ball (Yellow) Something bigger worth trying is clearview Tammy. Anyway whats this got to do with petroleum jelly Hehe All the very best

Re ants, I found that if you kill one, a dozen come to the funeral so I don't bother.

Moohlight I think Slugit has gone from the market now, however slug clear does the same job again I have used this as a spray.

I seem to recall that back in the '50s and early'60s we used petroleum jelly (AKA vaseline) for a different purpose. it was a substitute for brylcream. You may laugh but it did a good job of keeping the old DA in place.

Did use Brylcream of course but it sort of fell out of favour in my part of the country. Everything washed out ok as we used fairy liquid to wash our hair . Another trick we did was to brush our teeth with Vim to keep them free of any tobacco stains. Not to be emulated now of course. Happy days.

Hi With the ant powder being puffed directly on to the bottom stem of the plant it acts as a barrier to critters climbing up the plants. Something else you may want to try, it is not to bad this season but when it is wetter conditions and the little snails are eating leaves quite high up in the plants. When you give a folia feed include slugit in the water and this will sort those out you will have to re apply if it rains it does work. You probably do this already but your plants will take up as many nutrients through the leaves then they do through the roots, so every time you spray include some feed in the form of high nitrogen or potash along with maybe seaweed and comfrey this is as benefitial to the plants as feed in the roots. The results are great. Good luck with your growing and showing whether it be Wisley or Harrogate First off, may I ask how ant powder stops earwigs climbing the plant? Secondly, when you use Slugit it is active for up to 6 months, once it has dried on the plant. Thirdly, plants should only be folia fed by fertilisers specifically for that purpose, also, are you suggestion members mix chemical fertilisers with chemical pesticides? That is ludicrous and dangerous. Also, why is everyone trying to kill earwigs? They are a gardeners friend. I mix them, not every occasion with pesticide, only when its time to use the pesticide again.

Now then once and for all. I never said I spray slugit as you said "every day" David. I suggested that whilst spraying on your routine spraying programme you may want to spray once with slugit however if it rains shortly after spraying you will have to re apply. Now I have used ant powder on the base of my plants for a number of years and I have very little problems if any with earwigs. By the way I am very successful with my Dahlias. Oh and I know what I am talking about David. Good night and hope the earwigs don't bite. Hope you have a successful season. I think now the subject has been exhausted now cheers, Ian Thanks for the info Ian, I used sluggit in the past, but only for watering the ground, I will try all your tips, the earwigs are making a right mess of the soft foliage at the top of my the plants.
