Will be watching with interest to see how much has changed since my day. I know that when we went back for a 50th reunion most of us were astounded with some of the changes. Elf and safety regulations which didn't exist when I was in. No 'safety nets' on the tarzan course and no safety procedures at all on cliff climbing or indeed any of the weird and wonderful things we had to do. If someone got hurt it was their own fault for not doing it properly. if anyone watches it let me know what you think.

I thought that in the armed services, you were always taught about the dangers and how to deal with them. How can that happen if you remove the dangers in training? Flipping daft.

I will be watching as husband went to see the marines take over the guard at Buckingham Palace about four weeks ago. He went to lunch with them at St James' Palace and later back to a formal dinner in his dinner suit. The engineer's son is an officer in the marines and I remember his training.

Well I watched it and wondered at first what was going on! I then realised that the Marines Depot at Deal in kent was no longer there. That was our first port of call when I joined up and where we learned most of the basics including the language. Not the swearing that was on display tonight. No instructor ever swore at us or spoke the way that corporal did on the programme so that would appear to be a sign of the times. It seems you go direct to Lympstone now and get a lot of bull and physical training to weed out anyone unfit for further training. In my day once you signed the dotted line you were in apart from medical discharge. I did have to laugh at the ones who were so tired after missing just ONE night's sleep. That is nothing to the reality still to come heh heh.

Husband was in the airforce, but had the same sort of basic training, and said they have quilts on their beds. That was different. I think he had scratchy blankets and had to make his bed up.

I tried to get in the army, but got rejected because of scoliosis. A real bummer.

If I had to do it all again I would. Reckon national service being brought back mightn't be a bad thing either.

No, it has hindered me all of my life. I have learned to ignore it and get on with my life. Though my back gives me a reminder every few weeks that I have a problem.
