You'd be alright there Bess , they have little penguins which you can hold onto & push in front of you, they started with ones for children but now have adults using them too, I would need one or else I'd have to hold onto the side or someone's arm! We just watch - O.H. can't skate & I haven't since I was about 17 & I wasn't any good then either! I'm not keen on New Year either Rosie , you're definitely in the wrong place if you want to have a quiet one! When I was little Cherry & still ate meat I used to like steak & kidney pie, but I did used to pick all the kidney out & leave it! There is only 4 houses where we live SueA, it's always a quiet new year, but Aberdeen, Stonehaven etc have big parties and stonehaven has the fireball ceremony. www.stonehavenfireballs.co.uk/

That looks fascinating Rosie - but a little bit scary!

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-20971313This is the Burning of the Clavie in Burghead where I used to live. Our house was next but one to the Doorie Hill where the Clavie came to rest after going around the village stopping to give pieces out to some Burghead residents who qualified by birth. We had to move the car because sparks would land on it. One of the show springers I bred was called Clavie.

Cherry! I was asking OH for ideas for gifts he might appreciate from the family, and he thought of a CD of virtuoso violin music...so out came my iPad and I played various snippets to him - and we found that his favourite was the Paganini violin concerto no. 1. I found a violinist that he really liked, but stupidly forgot to note his name and the orchestra - then I went on to other famous violinists like Yehudi Menuhin etc and when I tried to find violinist no. 1 again I couldn't! How silly is that? Well, we both tried (when we had a spare moment) all day on and off via lists of violinists, all the recordings of the Paganini, every way we could think of, and OH was triumphant at around 10 last night, so I wrote it down...and I shall ask our daughter to get hold of a CD of this particular soloist and orchestra. I bet it'll be out of stock or unobtainable! OH is so difficult to buy things for, it'll be a major triumph if she's able to please him. What a palaver!

How lovely that is Geranium and the violinist would need to be good. Yehudi Menuhin was one of the greats, but digital recording makes a difference.

We listened to Yehudi, Cherry but the recording is 'tinny' compared with the more modern CDs. I hoped that Nigel Kennedy might have recorded it, but he hasn't. PH spent an hour last night collecting possible 'names' in case Albrecht Menzel isn't available.

It really pleases me to see that you are going to the bother of choosing the right artist Geranium. This is very important.

Went up to the loft this morning to get down the 'Christmas' boxes (cards and paper bought last year in sales) and the few decorations I still use and found damp patches on the loft floor OH has had a look and thinks it may be the roof flashing needs repair as the damp is mainly around the chimney area.

Hope it's not too big a job peony & that your cards & decorations were O.K., it might just be you need the flashing replacing around the chimney & maybe to have it repointed? You've just made me think I must go & check my box of Christmas cards that are in the boxroom here - we've had to throw some books & clothes (luckily very old ones!) away which we'd just pushed in there when we moved here without noticing that the room was a bit mouldy around the window/side wall area!

There is always something peony. Maintenance never stops. You're so right Cherry, but these things always seem to happen at the most inconvenient time

The cards etc are OK SueA. OH thinks the leak is a recent one and agrees with you that it is most likely the flashing that needs replacing

I must persuade OH to get the cards etc down from the loft - so that I can see how many I need to buy. Writing cards is always my job - I wonder why that is? I don't want to move to 'Christmas emails' but the price of stamps makes sending cards a very expensive thing to do these days.

Its not there now, I wonder where it's gone..

I was not a bit worried that I did not have a piece of the clavie which I could have picked up from where it came to rest to finish burning. It is a genuine tradition, but gets bigger every year.
