It looks as though we're naughty gardeners. Geranium, tell that to the Irish. They burn peat to make electricity. When they stop doing this, I will take it more seriously.

In England all our peat goes into compost but I'm with you Cherry, when big guys stop trying to make me feel guilty for their greed, I might reconsider. The little I use is a drop in the ocean, I learn by example.

I read that peat is actually a renewable resource in some places where they bother to help it along. That's a very good reason for carrying on using it, as far as I'm concerned. I did try some coir based stuff - it was useless.

I've yet to hear of anyone that thinks the alternatives are much better, maybe there is, does anyone know?

The RHS are trying hard to develop substitutes for peat, and the Gardening Which magazine keeps telling me there are 'good' peatless growing mediums. I'll have a look later and tell you which one(s) they recommend.

I tried peat free last yr and it was a disaster, my seedlings really struggled and it dried out too quick, used the bags I had left to dress the lawn, and not sure that was of any use But I do worry about the CO2 as peat is a big storage vector, but if its used commercially to fire power stations, Pot Kettle Black comes to mind

I found the 'Which' report, and their 'top buys' for containers in March 2010 were:
Vital Earth Tub & Basket compost, New Horizon Multi-purpose compost and Vital Earth Multi-purpose compost.
All of them are peat-free. I admit that I haven't tried any of them, so I can't comment from experience.
