Hydroponics comes to mind if you want to grow things differently. How you use it in pots / containers I wouldn't know

the peat bog ecosystem is a fantastic aspect of nature. I hate the thought of the continued 'rape' of these special places. I buy the reduced peat and then mix in my own leaf mould/compost bin stuff. I agree that the total peat free ones are a long way off being good enough. Peat isnt good for the plants that prefer alkaline conditions though.

guess what i voted for anyway, for those of you who want a pure peat based compost and use a lot of it, or want other things like hanging basket composts, soil conditioners, etc, i get all my stuff from here www.cumbriagardensandpetsdirect.co.uk/main.aspIt is good , only trouble is you need a pallet load( about 20 bags) but if you belong to an allotment society, etc, i'm sure between you you could get a combination of products to fill a pallet. They will also make a compost to your specifications, so if you wanted your compost mixed with anything extra they'll do it for you. Give him a ring, he's always happy to talk. Spoke to him today and he reckons it'll be 2020 before peat is banned.

It looks as though we're naughty gardeners. Geranium, tell that to the Irish. They burn peat to make electricity. When they stop doing this, I will take it more seriously. I'm saying nothing , but I did vote ;D

I'm trying to use peat free and reduced peat composts...I've found a lot of variation in the quality and texture even within the same brand. I much prefer the softer, peat based products as they are so easy to work with...but my results seem OK. I use New Horizon, Wilkinson's and a GC's own..
