Hello I have eventually persuaded my girlfriend to let me move a rowan tree at the end of the garden so I can extend my dahlia plot! The only thing is I've never moved a tree so big (about 15ft) so want to give it the best chance of survival. Any tips would be much appreciated? Thankyou

Mark, you are talking of a big job, any chance of a decent view of the tree so we can see the size of it? If you are going to do the job by hand you will need to work out, roughly, the distance the root system grows from the main trunk. You would then need to dig a trench around the rootball and go down to just below the root system. Then you will need to cut below the roots to free them from the soil. After all that, you need to get the plant out and transferred to it`s new position where you have already prepared the hole to accept it. Best of luck.

I am sure your Rowan is gorgeous MarkE, but I think I would rather buy a new one for your girlfriend than move one which is so established. Best of luck with the move.

I think I've come to my senses and I'm just going to leave it! After all the rowan will still be there when me and my dahlias have long gone! Thankyou very much for the help!

Mark, why not just put the Dahlia bed AROUND the Rowan?
