ian with the potassium of nitrate how much per plant ? And how long after planting do you apply ? Just the one treatment? I have the chempak soluble high nitrogen in stock. Just to remind you that potassium nitrate is explosive, and if used as a dry dressing you have to be very careful, otherwise you may blow your plants up. Just had a 'lightbulb' moment.... now I know why they used to talk about fertiliser bombs on the news. Doh!

Raymond I make up a feed with Urea and Potasium Nitrate it is an old feed dare I say it some Chrysanthemum growers use it. It is fed in a very diluted form. But if you are happy to buy Chempak and can afford it, you cannot get much better than that. Although I favour Vitax feeds.

PS All the best analogies relate to food, in my humble pie opinion

Raymond please take this they way it is intended. Good luck Raymond It is all in good fun Ian. With my luck it would happen ! Would probably make the local press. Amateur gardener takes out entire row of gardens through fertilizer bomb ! Anti terror squad sent to investigate for crimes to dahlias and general horticulture . Hahaha I am using vitax q4 as base dressing Ian. I got the chempak in I can use that on other stuff did not buy much only a box as I do not want to over feed. I can order in the vitax high nitrogen. That's if nitrogen feed is that important or just go balanced until potash ? Only growing just over a hundred plants cutting lots out. Stupid purchases now going to friends and plant sale.

Raymond I think 100 plants is enough to do some damage. I think I have said before to you after your base dressing (I use Q4 and Nitro chalk) nitro chalk is a very fast acting nitrogen for early on then the Q4 or FBB is slower release. Then I do not extra feed for the first month, then I feed two - three Hight Nitrogen feeds. All feed is applied by watering can I get to see each plant that way. I don't give a balanced feed I go straight onto high potash from bud stage again two - three feeds. One or two varieties I use an extra addition of sulphate of potash (moonlights)
I do folia feed with seaweed extract and comfrey. I do not feed miniature decs and I do not feed my kiwis any potash. I add Epsom Salts to the feed two teaspoons per 2gal watering can 8 plants per fill, at bud stage for colour.
I think the thing with Kiwis is lots of water and that is true of all Dahlias. Happy growing Raymond

Thank you ian I will note all this down.I will order the nitro chalk. Hope that is not explosive ! Hahaha I won't be doing any kiwis this year. Pink suffusion as being small for a sml Dec does it need a bit of extra feed ? Let's see what happens. layout has changed dramatically . Lots of culls I may drop winholm Diane and do another min Dec. Still debating that one. All the best

Pink suffusion is a beautiful little thing (unfortunetely it is small) the last time I grew it I put two plants in a planting hole and grew it as one plant growing 6-8 single plants are best grown no more than 4 up To get a descent size for showing now this variety will benefit from from the addition of Epsom Salts the colour is super Q4 will also help with the colour.
Persivere with Winholme Raymond it will be worth it you see grown 6-7 up
What miniature decs have you got?

Raymond, Dikara Superb does quite a bit of winning, it can be a little coarse and streaky however I think it is better than the seedling you mentioned. George Marston is very very good but you need to cut it with a large centre as they do keep on developing when cut, so to stand any chance of a decent centre cut them big centred.
