As a plant it has loads of blooms but none were very good. In fact when I looked back over last years photos I could find a single photo of a fully open bloom. I think I was waiting for a really good one.

Does anyone root there dahlia cuttings using rooting gel instead of powder? I used a gel last season anthonyk and had a few failures. I then changed to STRIKE a powder and never lost another cutting.

How do you go about showing at Harrogate? I take it you can't just show up with blooms!do you have to start in the novice section? Which I would want to!

Hi Mark, no you do not have to start as a Novice. You can either pick up a schedule at the National Dahlia Society AGM held on Sunday 8th March or the Northern AGM on the 28th March or ask the secretary for one or look on line on the National Dahlia Society web page and you can read it there or down load your own copy when available. If it isn't available now then it will be shortly. cheers Ian.

I see a few people grow there dahlias using weed surpresent membrane?.. Is there a big advantage using this method? candyblue used it last year anthonyk, and believe me, it didn't do any harm to her dahlias. Her blooms were spot on, and harvested plenty of medals and cards. I've brought some for my plot at home to see how it goes with my watering system, but I think it will be fine.

Hi I always use it 100 meter 1 metre wide is approx. £50 and well worth it all you do is prepare the ground put your base fertilizer down and most importantly slug pellets (although slug pellets are better applied a couple of months before) then lay down the ground cover and I staple mine down again you can get the staples. then cut square or round holes in the ground cover by cutting a cross through the cover the plants are then planted through the ground cover and the flaps of the cut material goes back up against the stem of the plant. The ground cover will stop all the weeds you normally have to deal with the only weed you will have it what may grow through the holes cut but the plants will soon suppress these. The ground cover I use is Mypex it is a woven material. Some Southern growers tell me they prefer to use straw as they feel it keeps the ground cooler. My Dahlias are OK grown through it. I do know that watering is not a problem water goes through quite easily, or seep hoses can be used underneath. At the end of the season plants are cut down the ground cover rolled back tubers dug up then the cover can be pinned back down to prevent weed growth, when you are ready for cultivating the next year the same holes can be planted through, canes are easily inserted for support. All my plot is covered over with one meter wide Mypex giving me approx. one meter wide paths and one meter wide beds with very little weed.

Many thanks markymate and Ian I'm going to give it a try...do you still water as normal or does the membrane mean you can water less often?

I see a few people grow there dahlias using weed surpresent membrane?.. Is there a big advantage using this method? I use same method as Ian, when I roll mypex back I turn in round so the cut outs are in a different place from previous season and I use seep hose under it . I don't use canes for supports, I prefer netting less work, one about 18" high and next one 3' high pulled tight over the plants, but for Mary's Jomanda am going for three ,trying to keep plant growing straighter she can be a right pain.

Totally agree, mine has gone too tall and spread out and into other varieties. One of those varieties that need careful planning of location and neighbours.
