When I tried cuttings in a heated propagator I had the lid on, lost a lot of cuttings back then, I then left the lid off, that seemed to cure the damping off for me.

Hi David V and welcome. I agree with Tel your problem is more than likely moisture combined with still air, ventilation is very important. As for the removal of the tiny shoots I personally would leave them on as I find I get a good strong root system that way and I feel a better root system than if they were removed. Try some with try some without then you decide, but I would leave them on.

Hi David when I first started taking cuttings I lost loads, filled my new propagator up and they all turned black in a day , like tel and Ian said they need air flow around them. Has your propagator got a thermostat if so turn it down or off in the day put back on evening time don't go over board with water.

Thanks, sounds like good advice, the lid is coming off Tel! Ian, I'll leave them on as you suggest, though will they develop into full branches if I do? I do actually grow around 60 plants in a very haphazard, inexact style. I currently grow Trengrove, MarysJ, Ruskin Myra, Hamari A, Cornel. Might add a small ball/small dec. Thinking of Charlie Briggs or Rossendale Peach. 2 of Mr Kershaws I believe.

Sounds like you have a good selection there. Yes the two Dahlias you mentioned you may add are indeed two of my very good friends Don Kershaw and worth growing. Yes the shoots you leave on will develop into shots you can leave on or remove. However they tend to be strong shoots that hold good blooms.

Ste b? Steve Burns? Theres no stat unfortunately but for £25 was a great bargain off Ebay! I did probably over-wet the compost and a mist a bit to enthusiastically. I will try the lid off heat on idea as well as my no-heat propagators. (vents fully open) Thanks for all advice, appreciated.

I don't know why, but my lid stays on all the time, there is no air flow, the greenhouse hits 80'f quickly and I lose very few cuttings. The problem IMO is too much bottom heat coupled with too wet compost. Using my set up, the bottom heat is thermostatically controlled at 60'f and is probably only on for 6 hours a day. So I'm afraid I disagree with those who say remove the lid.

Now I use a heated bench the only thing I cover with is paper to keep the sun off, when we get any that is.

I do not have a problem as I root on a heated bench with mist and before this as Tel does on the open heated bench. Each to their own. It has been a good propagating period for me. Happy days

The only ones I lost were a batch of moonlights and Blyton softer gleam, both of which I was short of, which I was rooting in cells. The compost dried out too much whilst I was away for 3 days, found them shrivelled looking like Raymonds Thought I'd watered everything but obviously missed them. Don't get that drying out problem when rooting in pots.

It's the number of flower bearing stems you allow to develop... A 'small' might be grown 8 up for example. If you let all the stems develop the blooms might be smaller than desired for the category. Best I can explain dianthus!

That could be your problem then to much bottom heat, wet soggy compost, misting them is ok, if you leave top on cover with news paper, they should be ok. Yep you got my name right. Mr valentine. I thought it was you nice to see you on here , you will learn and pick up some good tips and have a laugh along the way .
