I was going to use mypex or another weed retardent fabric but decided not to. Will mulch with either spent mushroom compost, peat or composted bark. Need to research more. Raymond my main reason for using mypex is to cut out weeding not got time Woking all day and it does help retain water, watch out for composted bark it's very dry and if we have hot summer? It's a breeding ground for red spider mite , a mate of mine got a infestation through composted bark, a friend of mine doesn't use any mulch waters every night has not got one weed on his plot, and grows superb dahlias and has done for 60 yrs. Thanks for that Steve I did have some spider mite issues this year lost my sir Alf to them and another got hit. So point taken on the bark. Just dont want the soil getting to hot Under the Fabric. I have clay soil here. Getting better but needs a lot more work. Will raise the soil level also this year by about 6 inches and plant deeper Taking the bottom pair of leaves Off. Another great tip from the forum. Plenty of time to decide on the mulch need some plants first ! Hahaha

Hahaha I no you had red spider , fabric won't make your soil hot lots of growers use it with good results, but you don't after use it if you can keep on top of weeding.

Tip if your spraying something like provardo early on before planting out mix some up in a bucket and dip plant in it then plant out, if you buy any plants in do the same even if they look clean.

Could anyone tell me how mothers plants work? Could this be a way for me to get the 10 pom plants for each variety I want without buying 10 plants?

The way I understand it, and do it, is when taking early cuttings, grow them on, then take more cuttings of them. Hence mother plant... Well that's how I used them last year

Hi mark I think am right if not someone will put us right, some growers will take cuttings in sept off a bad tuber maker like Jomanda and grow them on through winter, when they start to grow and make side shoots take cuttings of them, then you get more shoots and more cuttings and so on , you can always buy 3 plants in spring grow them on and when big enough take the tops off root them, and your 3 mother plants make 6 more cuttings so you get 9 plants off 3 , you can keep going and get more hope that helps? .

Mark, I see that you are propagating tubers, why don't you buy tubers, instead of mini plants, it's a cheaper way of buying stock. Plus, you get to have the fun of doing your own cuttings. Mind you, you need to have a greenhouse, and heat of course , or a conservatory!

Now then a top tip to save a little heat in the greenhouse. Over my heated bed I have a metal dexion structure and I throw a piece of fleece over to cover the tuber bed, I suppose-like a tent closed over at both ends. I find with only bottom heat on it gets nice and cosy and the air temp under the fleece is enough. So with the heater only set on frost free (just incase of a really bad frost) the tubers are fine and 'wake' up pretty quick. If you do not have a structure above your heated bench then you could always make a tent like structure with canes tied with a little twine. It works and saves the cost of running a heater. I also like most other growers have bubble wrap up which I change every other year.

Thanks for the tip Ian..could anyone advise me if it matters with collerettes if they are grown with tubers or cuttings from tubers?... Does it make any difference to the flowering as in quality?
