About to get a bikini vase to practice staging with. Seen them on LBS at £10-05. Seems a bit steep for what they are. Anyone know of any other suppliers? Do I need the 12" one btw, that seems to be the biggest, the 11" one is a lot narrower.

I have been thinning down to numbers not getting it done as quickly as I wanted as took a funny turn yesterday moving 40 30litre pots full of heavy damp soil and large dahlias ! Went to doctor blood pressure is high . Dahlia stress !
I will thin the rest tomorrow but wanted to ask on the mediums I am finding on some very very strong shoots coming up below the lead tip. Do I remove these and put the energy into the bud forming in the tip or run these shoots up instead ?
Also do I do most of the thinning down eg removing further side shoots once I secure the flowering bud ? Eg if taking 2 pairs down from flowering bud and wing buds do this when I secure the bud for flowering.
Mulch is down finally ! On everything bar the front. 2 to 3 inches of manure and compost mixed for the decs, ball and semi cactus. Compost for the cactus. Manure and compost for the collarettes.
Allowing a kelsea Carla , Weston pirate, Hapet ideal , raisers pride, a dikara superb, Mary's jomanda and a zoe bloom to flower so I can see the size.

Trying an experiment with ryecroft pixie . I put two into my top border in part shade to see if it gets drawn up . So far it is 2.5 feet with no buds yet. If it flowers in time then I might get some decent stem length.

Raymond I know exactly how you feel but you cannot let your desperate enthusiasm to do it right make you ill. I know that you have friends in very high places that have helped you and shared their advice and experience but you cannot try to emulate what they can achieve after years and years of experience. Don't forget they were the same as you now.
I am the same, in as far as I am constantly desperate to do it right which actually probably holds me back because I worry to much.
I can't be my Father but I wish I could do it right, like him but he has a, a bigger garden, b, more time, c, experience.
He still makes mistakes and also sometimes things happen that isn't what it should and he tries to work out what is wrong, like a complex mathematical problem. I know that if something is wrong, he won't be happy until he works out why.
Respect to you for inviting an experienced dahlia grower / expert to come and look at your dahlias. I wouldn't I would be way too embarrassed.
Please be kinder to yourself or you will make yourself very ill (and that would drive you nuts being stuck in hospital in the run up to a show.)

What would really help me would be to see some photos from our experienced growers of how their dahlias look now. So that beginners (and I include myself here) have a clue what we should be aiming for.
I still don't get how many buds I should have and whether they should be opening or what.
Photos of garden shots will be very much appreciated. Thank You. (Normally I have a tendency to look at what I have and see what is wrong - what I want to see is what I need to aspire to and hopefully find some things that I have done right.)
If that makes sense.

Also that other thing about my Father is that although he knows so much more than me, he is always interested in my updates and summaries of experiences and 'hot topics' at Garden Friends. If I hadn't read here, he would not have grown and shown Rycroft Zoe which I bought because scrumpy always spoke so highly and Ruskin Myra which I got from dcdahlia. He obviously liked both as he entered them in shows, collected seed and is growing them again.
I might not be able to do what he does but I have contributed with a lot of help from my
Garden Friends.

Moonlight thanks for these posts. They remind me of why I planted my first dahlia ( my late parents) and the new friends I have made on here. We are all learning, guiding and nurturing. We agree and disagree, we achieve and fail- nature decides. Each to our own, to be enjoyed and admired. HAPPY growing

Moonlight I am taking it easy. Thinned them down and letting them run now. What will be will be. Not helped this year by all other stuff I grow and lack of rain etc.... Meant so much more watering etc... I will put in soaker hoses next year. Learned so much made a TON of mistakes but as you say have to learn. To any new grower NEVER NEVER DO A PART TRIPLE ROW ! What a pain in the *** ! Hehehehe Also I will thin down on the varieties by approx half for next year probably more. I am growing 5 small decs ! Idiot ! Winholm Diane , senzoe Ursula, wyns favourite, Clearview Debby and pink suffusion ! Only two will be grown again and it won't be pink suffusion ! Hehehe all the best for the season ahead. Ps one of my counterparts who won the novice in Kent last year is so far behind and he made the worst mistake possible. He did not label his plants did a chart of the planting and lost the chart ! He is growing from marston George to sir Alf , Clearview Edie etc.... I hope he can sort it out.
