ian what I keep meaning to ask but keep forgetting (I only seem to remember when I'm outside looking at them but forget like my mind is sort of automatically erasing itself - maybe it feels guilty thinking about dahlias so much and ought to be inside more often? anyway) is how far along should a Waterlily dahlia look like now? Dad hasn't grown waterlilly - so he doesn't know. My Vivian Russell doesn't look half as good as my other two. I'll try and find a photo but I can't lay my hands on an uptodate photo of what they look like.
Anyone able to share what a waterlilly dahlia should look like at this point in the season?
Also is it Waterlilly? or Waterlily? or Water Lilly? or Water Lily?

The advancing dahlia jungle ! Must fix that back fence this week. Not all of them more in top border at side of garage in front garden and in back corner. Far to many and far to many varieties. The tall one in main border to the right is narrows Sonia becoming a beast of a plant. Very unusual foliage. Got a member of Kent dahlia society visiting tomorrow who judges as well to give me some tips etc... ian you know Peter Tate ? The jungle

Ask him why he doesn't judge at Harrogate ? Is he a new judge? I don't recall him, but I am sure he will give you some hands on advice, well done Raymond

Hi Dianthus, I think it was one boy not boys! Lesley keep on posting For Christs sake Ian give it a rest. You are pretty good at dishing it out but not so good at taking it. Bully my ****. I made a light hearted comment and all I get is grief. Pathetic the lot of you. There there Scrumpy, kissy kissy don't be grumpy Scrumpy, have you secured all your buds for Shrewsbury! should be some stiff competition so I hear. Good luck. How's your Zoe sport and Moonlight sport shaping up? By the way I never mentioned a bully......... But we don't want to be putting new growers off do we, oh and I am not doing the dishes, I have a machine Hehehehe

When I tried waterlily's I stopped them at the beginning of July for the Sept shows. I stopped growing them I could not get the depth of the bloom right, my fault for not asking about them, i had not seen anyone staging them at that time either. It was only later that I found out the people that grew Waterlily varieties had to remove a lot of petals from the base of the bloom to get to the required depth.

Had my visit from Peter Tate. He was pretty impressed with the plants overall and said doing well. My hillcrest jersie doing better than his and he liked raisers pride said the best plant of it he has seen in a long time. He was most impressed with greenways zoe scrumpy said was a great plant . He showed me some techniques about timing and where to take back to for my main show hope. I have some dahlia smut he diagnosed . So spraying with amistar which I acquired some of. He said been a problem down here and also spider mites a problem with many growers down here. He did say my spacing was wrong which I new myself. More so with the mediums. He is positive I should do well. So that was nice to here. Said I should go for the big non cover class the pembury perpetual as well as the novice and members . I went to his plot and he has some in flower. I liked Weston miss. He has a candy looking like it is sporting. All white with a pink outer petal . what was interesting is how much shorter his plants where than mine. He said this is probably due to the spacing and giving the nitrogen feed. Which he only gives one of. It is nice to here some good feedback much to learn and he said don't be scared to manipulate them. Keep in control of them. ian I mentioned to him about harrogate if he is not judging already he would be happy to come up.
