Well just had another massive downpour of rain. Only so much they can take. Grenidor pastelle ruined, narrows Sonia ruined, even the zoes ruined, hillcrest jersie spots. The only ones that really are holding out are candy, Andrea, Ac Abby kenora sunset to an extent and surprisingly winholm Diane so far ! wyns favourite stunning but is clock faced I hope it lifts it head as still forming. Senzoe Ursula stunning but think it will blow before my show. Centre is not closed a bit green but not far off worried about the back of it.

Such a shame after your hard work Raymond....could you not fix some temporary covers over your plants?....

It's ok Lou78W been that bad here some top growers covers frames collapsed ! Just had to run and reinforce a kenora sunset and narrows Sonia the neck went as big blooms. What will be will be. Will risk it and give them another soluble sulphate of potash tomorrow and also put some in the cutting water. That's if the bloom itself survives the rain without to much damage.

Well 24hrs until I cut and not looking hopeful. The ones that would be ready so badly damaged not worth it and the nice ones still green ornunclosed centres. Looks like I will have some candy, zoe sport, kelsea Carla 2 off one plant that look nice, 2 jersie . Maybe a winholm Diane and wyns fav if the centres close.
Got a reasonabley well matched undamaged set of three kenora sunset but I think they will blow before sunday. Don't think I will have any miniature ball or min Dec. Either blown centre or not fully open. Off to water them . Might cut some tonight and get them in a dark cool room and see if they develop over 36 hours before show.

Already decided dropping the following for next year
Hillcrest candy Raisers pride Grenidor pastelle spilt petals and marks easily Also fims Winholm Diane (damps off with a sneeze) Parkland rave ( great colour and for the garden but to course ) Hapet daydream ( great for the garden) Narrows Sonia super rubbery stems I might try one again as bloom has potential. Stillwater brilliant great for garden spectacular colour. Weston pirate I think pixie is nicer. Mary's jomanda I prefer Clearview Daniel habit wise . Hapet ideal Claire de lune Kilncroft Becka has flaw in it bad petal overlay Ryecroft Marge Ryecroft Jim Matilda Houston a nice dahlia but only garden Kenora Valentine Clearview Sundance
Hillcrest jersie still to decide. Saw a couple of nice ones in Kent grown with no feed. Got the size easily on it and compact but hockey stick petals also spots and damp s off.
I might drop kenora sunset we shall see.
More to drop still . Maybe dikara superb but coming good now.

Advice please Ian. One of the blooms I have on one of my Amber Festival plants may be a sport. The bloom has lower petals of creamy yellow similar to that of Winholme Diane. Moving towards the upper petals the yellow becomes more profound. The bloom has an amber/orange centre. In your opinion is this a sport and if so how do I preserve the bloom?

Hi Diggie Ok take as many side shoot cuttings from the flowering lateral as you can, if they are not very big or big enough to take then let them get a bit bigger. Prep the cutting up you may have to reduce the size of the leaves to prevent too much transpiration and help the cutting to stay turgid, root them then pot them up and the hard part keeping them over the winter. This plant could then be used as a mother plant from which you can take cuttings from. Only take a few cuttings to grow on to see if the sport has taken.
Now sometimes blooms are a different colour when they grow down in the foliage so this is not a sport just affected by the weather or affected by the shade

Was interested in Diggies post and Ians reply. I bought some Charlie Briggs (small orange ball) plants off Station House Nurseries. (Eurodahlia) They have grown and bloomed well but one of the plants has turned out a very striking RED small ball. All blooms the same colour not just on one lateral and the buds were large and flattened in appearance. Surely not a 'sport' on all 8 stems? Or have the Nursery chucked in an odd plant by mistake? If so I'd like to know what it is to grow on next season!

Could be a stray plant cannot tell the variety from those blooms is the foliage and the habit of the plant the same as Charlie Briggs? Send a copy of the photo and ask Sean at station house he will then be able to identify it for you.
