Really smart set up Scrumpy, it looks immaculate! Your plants looking super healthy. Forgive my ignorance, but what do you mean by 'plenty of buds to knock back?' Clearly they've been stopped, laterals developing. I'm also growing Marston George this year. Mine nowhere near as far on as yours.

At each leaf joint you get a side shoot that forms a bud. Depending on when you have a show, you either leave that side shoot on to let it flower, or remove it. Those shoots you see at the top of the plant have a tiny bud on them that will flower in about 25 days. So they will be removed and shoots in the next set of leaves down will be allowed to grow and so on. I shall be letting them develop from about the 20th July.

Massive thunder and lightning storm followed by some very heavy rain here. Woke daughter up and she was very scared. Been up with headache, so went down to have a look. Very wet and fresh. Lovely.

Hope your daughter was not to scared Moonlight. Been through the plants this morning. Fairly happy with them bar some Capsid damage. Bug clear and ultimate bug ineffective. So have ordered a professional one. a lot of plants damaged by Capsid through the garden. Also found two very hungry caterpillars one devouring trelyn kiwi and Allan snowfire. They did not survive long that's four plants damaged by caterpillars now. One zoe, one candy and these two. Stopped hillcrest Jersie, kelsea Carla Ruskin Andrea , both zoes. The zoes just want to flower. Don't know if I have done it right. One zoe was easy as it was smaller. The others took an age as had budded up so early it made it problematic as multiple stems. Will need to de branch I think a lot. Will stop Diane, senzoe and dikara superb tomorrow. Using some Kent members timings for these. Disbudded and stripped down a couple of kenora sunset stems. See if the blooms are better size, more petal and depth. Makes good practise. I have a spare large pot. So I have a candy or peach delight ready to plant in it tomorrow morning. They are big and have been stopped. May as well. Will stop garden friends tomorrow also. Nice to have a flower now but would like to show it. Allowing Ac abby and parkland rave to flower . Ac abby in bud so have disbudded and left the crown bud only. Off to work now. Boo hoo

Ant powder sprayed around the base of your plants works

Did you disbranch the plant down to the required number (Marston G =10 I think?) before starting this 'knock back process? In the few years I've been growing I've simply stopped/disbranched then secured the bloom just hoping it would be right for any show it might coincide with. wont the plant then form two shoots at the top of the stem where you cut it? (like double stopping) Would you then remove one of those? (plus all the lower buds) And what period would you wait before the replacement is in bloom? Thanks for your patience, this knock back thing is confusing me haha

Never grown Marston George before so I'm playing it by ear. Think I have 8 laterals per plant, didn't disbranch as that was all that came. So I will grow 2 blooms off a few of the laterals, up to 10 in total. Yes it will form 2 shoots. That's what you want. When the bud is the size of a pea, it'll take about 23 days to develop. if no show in 23 days, remove it and try a lower shoot for a later show.
