It wasn't as dark as it looks from the photo by a long way but this is my Barbarry Surprise. It is paler than I remember from the shows and the other thing that I felt was that the petals themselves looked delicate - reminded me of tissue paper - don't know if it was the colour or what but they looked finer.
Heard a russeling in the bushes which I hear quite a lot and head poked out. I very softly went 'oye (I'm here rather than shout and scream at it). Took one look at me and nipped back behind the bushes.
Girls have been very keen to go camping in a tent in our back garden but there is no way I'm going to let that happen with foxes in our garden, especially as I've seen one in the daytime.

That is a shame, but I share your worry.

*You may well want to skip this - seedling notes - You have been warned!*
Bill S/C - Notes 1 - Eastwood Moonlight - Dark stems 2 - Eastwood Moonlight - regular green stems + a bit nibbled 3 - Peach Delight - 'petit' and light green - jaggedly leaves Peach Delight - Stems 7 - Regular green Slightly darker: 8, 9 Mid dark 4, 6, DARK 5 and 10 10 - Peach Delight - Rounded leaves ala Brenda T Ryecroft Zoe Regular green stems: 11, 12, 15 Slightly darker stems: 13, 14, 16, 18,19, 20, 21 DARK stems: 17
Ryecroft Zoe with Hairy Stems: 16 and 12 Since Dad noticed some hairy seedlings I've spotted a few now. Weird. That's it on the S/C notes other than to say I'm interested in seeing if dark stems = dark flowers and whether pale leaves = light flowers. Also interested in spotting potential DNA parents - family resemblances at all etc.
*Wake UP!*

Wait... hold on... you mean Moonlight will be creating a hitherto unknown strain of Dhalia ?
Do you get naming rights ?
Could it have... like... Special Mutant Powers ? A sort of..... X-Dahlia ?

Wait... hold on... you mean Moonlight will be creating a hitherto unknown strain of Dhalia ? Do you get naming rights ? Could it have... like... Special Mutant Powers ? A sort of..... X-Dahlia ? roofgardener your post made me smile and here is my way too long reply. (Sorry been a tad quiet recently.) This is something else that makes me and cheers me up.
There is a list of questions for a son or daughter to answer about their Mummy - the only 'rule' is that you have to write down their very 1st answer to each question, it has to be the very 1st thing that pops into their head.
Here is part of Fairy's answers... Question:
8. What is Mummy's favourite thing to do? 9. What does Mummy do when you're not here? 10. If Mummy becomes famous what will it be for? 14. What makes you proud of Mummy? If only it were that easy. Well after now putting the mockers on my ever having any good seedlings. I've got all her answers on a sheet which I keep in my Diary because reading it cheers me up and makes me smile . When I read the whole thing it is like a great big hug and we all need Great Big Hugs sometimes.

Wait... hold on... you mean Moonlight will be creating a hitherto unknown strain of Dhalia ? Do you get naming rights ? Could it have... like... Special Mutant Powers ? A sort of..... X-Dahlia ? In answer to your questions Roofy,
It's all about The Birds Bees and theBees! (Either that or the paintbrush and I haven't done that.)
They create the DNA mixtures and so pretty much all the important stuff. We just go round squeezing seed heads, collecting seeds, sowing, pricking out and potting up those seedlings. Then we just wait with our fingers crossed.
Ultimately if we are very, very lucky and get something keep-able we get to name it.
Special Mutant Powers? hmmm bet you are looking out for a Mind Control presse? or an Invisibility Potion? You really are out for world domination but then again you have competition, now that we have ian Cruise secret agent 007 (with Sean Connery accent)

Wow... so you COULD - in principle - get naming rights ? That is just AWESOME.
As for X-Dhalia's ... well... it would have to be some sort of mutation that is useful to the survival of the flower.
Well, if the X-men can have "Storm", perhaps the Dhalia world would have "Light Shower" ?
