Didn't Booker T and the MGs sing about onions?
Roofy, your rotting tomato vines may have blight. The fruits then look brownish. Bag up the lot in a bin liner and dispose of in your dustbin.

I always used to love 'The Onion Song' by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell:- The Onion SongYou could play it in the Bobbletunnel Roofy to encourage your onions to grow - well people do talk to their plants!

LOL.... good calls, dianthus, steve and SueA. I don't think they're turning brown, dianthus. What seems to happen is they turn red, but then go squishy. Others seem to split their skins. I'm going to carry on bringing individual tomatoes and putting them on my windowsill. If any of them DO look blighted, I will dispose of them on a case-by-case basis. Thanks for the heads-up on that.

... Roofy, your rotting tomato vines may have blight. The fruits then look brownish. Bag up the lot in a bin liner and dispose of in your dustbin. Hmmm.... you where correct about the Blight, dianthus. I've done what you've suggested; rescued the surviving tomatoes (even the green ones), put them on my windowsill, and thrown the plant away. This leaves me with one more outdoor plant, which is still producing ripe tomatoes (though possibly not for much longer), and my three Polytunnel tomatoes. Speaking of which.... Grow-Light News
It has arrived... and has been duly strung up and installed. (as ever, click on the pictures for a larger verwion). It is VERY..... purple ? The power use seems to be behaving as advertised thus far; it is costing me around 9p/day to run it between 07:00 and 19:00 ! And the purple light DOES make all my tomatoes look red ! Now lets see if it ACTUALLY encourages them to ripen ! Oh.. another piece of cheerful news. I harvested my last two Spudlink bins over the weekend. These are the biggest I have ever produced, with several of them in the 'baking' category. Indeed, I was so pleased with them, that I made Stuffed Baked Spudlinks on Sunday evening, using roof-grown spring onions (finely chopped), and dressed with roof-grown Tomatoes (which grilled along with the cheese), and seasoned with Green Onion Chutney made by my Mum (from HER own tomatoes). I may bake some more, take a photograph, and post it in the Baked Potato thread !! All in all, it was a VERY productive and busy weekend. I awoke Sunday morning to discover that the wind had collapsed my small walk-in greenhouse. Only one plant was affected; a capsicum plant. Bizarrely, rather than turning upside down and crashing onto the floor as they usually do (spreading wet soil all over the place), this one just slid sideways onto an upturned trough when the shelf collapsed, and remained upright. Most odd, in a gratifying way. So... an hour or two was spent winding twine in a cats-cradle around the support posts and plastic linkage tubes, binding the whole thing together and making it virtually wind-proof. It might fly away, but it won't actually collapse ! Another happy few hours where spent storing plantpots in various places to allow the soil to dry out a bit. I also re-planted some of the potatoes back into a bin. (they had started to produce roots). The Roofgarden has NEVER been so organised and tidy in Winter. Previously it has been totaly neglected, and started to resemble a vegetative version of Steptoe and Son's junkyard. The Polytunnel, greenhouses, and storage bins are REALLY starting to earn their keep. So... my mission THIS week is to recover a bit more soil, and to plant more onions.

You have been busy Roofy
Sorry about your terminally ill tomatoes. Blight attacks so quickly, so be vigilant with your remaining fruits and never handle those plants when you have touched the ones you have on your window sill ripening. Also be careful with your lifted potatoes, as they can succumb.

Also, NEVER smoke or handle tobbacco when dealing with spuds or tomatoes. Certainly, don`t smoke in the tunnel if you are growing either.

I've got a vague memory of you cautioning me about this before daitheplant. Can you remind me about it ? I assume there is something in cigarette smoke that can damage both plants ?

Tobbacco is in the same family of plants as spuds and tomatoes, but is renown for carrying the spores of mosaic virus AS WELL as the dreaded blight.

You really are an expert roof gardener roofgardener. Have you ever thought of moving to somewhere convenient to a plot of land?

Thanks for that. I have gotten into the habit of smoking in the Polytunnel, or taking a ciggy break during gardening. I'm going to have to cut out the former, and ensure I wash my hands after the latter. Having said that, I tend to wear gloves (either latex 'surgical' gloves, or gardening gloves) when handling my plants, so this may help. I just need to be a bit more rigorous about it !

Has your purple lighting become a beacon for air traffic control, yet, Roofy?
Barny has arrived here, in South Wales, with some force in the last 2 hours, so I hope your roof garden copes with the onslaught.
