joysie21 why do you think it is dead and not acting like the deciduous shrub that it is? Has it got next year's buds on the stems and is the wood alive when you scratch the bark with your fingernail?

I havent been out the garden lately as I have a lousy cold I hope its still alive as before it lasted a couple of years as I took it out of a tub I wanted to use and it was so heavy I dumped it on top of another shrub which I never liked

Oh dear! When you are feeling better, have a good look at it and test the bark. It would take a lot to kill it.

Joysie. Philadelphus are very tough plants. It should be alright but there is little you can do about it until the spring.

Under the shed should be very easy to weed and you could do this as soon as possible. You are right about the bulbs. Leave them and lift them when they are over if you want to keep them.

You would be better to buy a proprietary insect spray.....it is illegal to use washing up liquid. You can also buy sprays to kill weeds....or you can hand weed... You could lay bark as a suppressant, but you would need to lay a membrane down first....
