I thought I might have a go at some cuttings of the couple I have, is it too late? do I need to give them bottom heat or will they root without it?

It is not too late, some of mine are not ready to take cuttings yet, but you really need bottom heat to root cuttings at a temp of 18c to19c go on grindle dahlia cuttings are easy.

Its not too late Grindle. If they haven't started sprouting already, bottom heat would be beneficial. To get blooms for this year you can take cuttings up to about the middle of April

I have some lovely shoots coming up on Amber Festival. This seems to be the strongest dahlia I have and the first one is 2 ins long with cotyledons and four leaves. The first two leaves are black for half their length. They are not reaching the top of the propagator, but I wonder if they are too damp. Perhaps I should have the vents open now. I feel quite silly. They maybe should have been open all the time. They may not even want a lid.

Cherry take that lid of straight away and remove those blackened leaves or you will lose your cuttings they are damping off. i made the same mistake when i first started taking dahlia cuttings.

That is done. Now, just over four hours later, I notice that these two leaves are completely black and shoots are coming up on Jomanda and M.Jomanda and doing the same thing. Oh dear! I had better do some reading on this subject.

The new shoots should be ok then.

Do you have to cut them near the tuber or will just below a leaf joint do?

Do you have to cut them near the tuber or will just below a leaf joint do? Dahlia growers have their own methods, i take my cuttings between the small cotyledons and the tuber, then more cuttings will form around the cut. Then trim the cutting just below the first true leaves, some growers cut those two leaves off, before inserting the cutting but i do not bother.
