Apparently the owner of the house before us had a bity dog and they put a thorn bush behind the fence so kids can't poke their hands through... it is a horrible nasty piece of work, I've tried digging it up but it's too deep, I've tried every weed killer on the market to stop it, but nothing, I have managed to cut it from its original massive height, but it's growing back. I don't know what the plant is called, but the thorns get caught in everything and are massively sharp, the branches twist round each other too... Will upload a picture of it in its small state. postimg.org/image/669ne6pn9/If anyone can tell me what it is and how to get rid of it that would be great. Thank you all and kind regards Amy

Welcome to the forum validusername1. I think this is Berberis darwinii which is very thorny, but beautiful in spring with golden yellow blossom. However, if it is in the wrong place, it is no use to you. Being a lazy gardener, I would cut it level with the ground and wait for the root to rot. You could plant around it so that it would not be noticed. I do have one of these and it was given a severe prune in the autumn, but it was protecting my beautiful white Hebe, so the Hebe is the plant which has suffered. It will come good. Other gardeners will give you advice on getting rid of this and you can then compare and choose what suits you best.

When I first saw your pic I was tucked up in bed last night so only just got back to have another look. My first thought was Osmanthus aquifolium which can be sometimes mistaken for holly but it does vary slightly and can be qite prickly. Berberis dawinii as cherry says could be as somewhat similar leaves smaller than osmanthus but whatever it is you wont get rid using weedkiller which just wash off the shiny leaves. If you want rid then dig it out. Ok so it involves a bit of graft but if I can manage things like that I am sure you can. indeed almost anyone with arms and legs could. failing that get a boy scout on bob a job week to dig it out for you.

Definitely Berberis Darwinii. It`s a pity you don`t like it as it can be a beautiful shrub if looked after properly. Welcome to the site by the way.
