Hi everybody. Joined the forum about 30 minutes ago. This is my first year of gardening. I was made redundant from my office job in the City of London last year, bought myself a greenhouse, a couple of Vitopod propagators, various packets of seeds and a dozen or so dahlia tubers and am currently trying to find homes in the garden for everything that grew. Whenever I watch Monty Don or any other TV gardener, they seem to take seconds to do things (such as repotting a plant), that take me 4 times longer to achieve, hence my username. Hopefully I will get quicker as I gain more experience and confidence. I wish I had taken this hobby up when I was still capable of touching my toes and seeing my feet without having to breath in!! I can't remember which great philosopher said it but it's true.........."youth is wasted on the young". I look forward to chatting with you guys and sharing knowledge over the forthcoming weeks, months and years. Cheers. Patrick.

Welcome to the forum theslowgardener. You are going to regret the name you chose as you will soon be reaching your toes and gardening uses up calories. It is good for the mind and body as I think you are finding out. You don't have to pot on your plants quickly.

Hi theslowgardener we are near each other I am in Catford. I totally agree with your comments. How people plant all the plants and pot things on super quick is beyond me. I am getting faster ! A little . Enjoy your new hobby. It can become quite obsessive. Dahlias taken over my life almost ! Hehehe All the very best Patrick. Ps good name same as me dad.

Patrick, this is your first year of gardening. There is no way you could have mastered pricking out and potting on etc with any great speed just yet. Look back on what you have said this time next year and you will be surprised at how you have improved. Welcome to the site, by the way.

Many thanks to everybody who posted a welcoming message.
I am hooked on Dahlias. I ordered 50+ varieties (rooted cuttings) from The National Dahlia Collection. I have re-potted them twice since taking delivery of them in the middle of May and they are now happily growing on in 7 inch pots. I will start a new thread listing details of my Dahlia collection with photos of each plant. Hopefully somebody will find this interesting.
Cheers, Patrick.

The truth is coming out now theslowgardener. You are another 'dahlia nut'. There is a lot of information available here and you may like to read back posts to catch up with everyone and their methods. Great hobby!

theslowgardener I hope your plants from.ndc doing well. Some of mine not that great. I would recommend halls of Heddon and other suppliers . Not the range of dahlias but very good plants. You should also come to the plant sales at Kent dahlia society. You get top exhibitors stock and lots of varieties. Sadly finished for this year .

I wasn't overly impressed with the service and will not use them again. I will certainly try Halls next year and would be very interested in attending the Kent Dahlia Society plant sales next year. Whereabouts is it held?

Hi theslowgardener , you don't have to pot things up/plant things out etc. quickly , just do it at whatever speed you are happy with, when you see gardeners on T.V. remember they do several 'takes' until they get it right & everything is edited so they can fit it all in the show. I'm probably quite a 'slow gardener' too, mind you I can spend ages staring at something figuring out the best way to do it before I actually get around to it!
