That's really interesting, Grindle, I had no idea where arsenic came from - in fact I think I sort of assumed it was a plant extract as I've only ever read about it in historical novels! I imagine the 'spoil' would be nasty stuff if you inhaled a lot of it. Will have to see if I can find some photos of Ludlow or somewhere local

I've never heard of that place grindle or the arsenic mines, it is an interesting story, I love the idea they came up with to allow off roading & rallying in the toxic dust in the 80s & 90s!

I love your pic of the statues in the sea at Crosby SueA, but I could never find them now. With this thread, they will all be together.

I don't know why John Paul Jones is there as he came from near Kirkcudbright. There are a lot of things and business named for him in Kirkcudbright, including Paul Jones Bakery. Your pictures are beautiful SueA and I know the area quite well as I stayed at Glenridding a few times and climbed Helvellyn too, the last time when I was 43. Living in Galloway as I did, I was quite close to this area.

I remember seeing lots about John Paul Jones in Kirkcudbright Cherry , apparently he tried to invade Whitehaven though & attacked one of the forts protecting the harbour. I stayed in Whitehaven on holiday about 40 years ago with a schoolfriend who had family there - it's changed a bit since then! We climbed Helvellyn once as well years ago but I'd rather just admire it from the ground now! We go to the South & West Lakes areas quite a lot grindle but not the North where we were this time, it's not as busy & 'touristy' in the north. We went to Keswick which was quite busy though & had a market on, what we noticed most there though was that everyone had at least one dog, usually two with them, Patterdale terriers, spaniels & labradors seemed very popular - you should take Dylan!

Beautiful pictures SueA, reminded me of a school holiday I went on near Ullswater, we stayed in a hostel and spent every day walking the hills and valleys in the continuous rain, but we all enjoyed it. Every evening we had to write what we had done into exercise books. It must have been early in the year because I remember lots of lambs in the fields. By the end of the week many of the roads were flooded and our coach had to make a detour when it came to collect us.

That first photo makes me want to re-read 'Swallows and Amazons'! Lovely. I've only ever driven through the area too, at least once en route from Scotland, then Solway, to Wales. We usually went up the other side to Scotland, the A68, by the Pennines and through Northumberland, another beautiful route.
