A neighbour asked me about this. Apparantly all of his spinache plants are bolting/going to seed, despite being very young and hardly producing any edible leaves yet.
I don't have much information to go on I'm afraid...other than this is NOT "beet" spinache, and is grown outdoors, in the soil. (not in a pot or under glass).
Any thoughts ?

Same here Roofy. I think we are supposed to make another sowing to last through the autumn and winter which I will do today. I put it down to the weather being too hot, but I don't know the real reason. I say this because the lettuces were wanting to bolt before they had given me useable leaves and I am pretty sure that is related to the heat.

Thanks for that Cherry.
My own spinache (which may be the beet variety) has done very well, without bolting. And my lettuce and other salad stuff is throwing out TONS of leaves, especially my little gems, so I am baffled.

As yours are growing in containers Roofus they are being watered regularly, The problem with your neighbours Spinach, I would suggest, is they are not being watered enough. If it is too dry, plants need to procreate before they die, hence they run to seed.

I know about the watering daitheplant, but the hose is rarely turned off. However, the beet did bolt when I went to Scotland for a week, so you could be right there. My beet is perpetual roofgardener, so I should have read the post more carefully. Dai those French lettuce seeds I gave you have made the prettiest plants for me and one of my neighbours. These are not bolting, so I thought they were better for the heat.
