Other than Cress what is the fastest growing vegetable or vegetables? I need to find out for my girls. Is there enough time to grow a vegetable this summer. Is it possible?

I think perpetual spinach is a good one because it will stand in the winter and doesn't seem to be eaten by everything which creeps and crawls. It looks pretty too. If the girls don't like it, use it in lasagne. I haven't done my second sowing yet, but will now because you have reminded me.

I'd second all the above & add pea shoots ( you can even grow them from dried peas in the storecupboard & snip them to add to salads etc.), rocket & maybe even baby cucumbers if you have a couple of months or cheat by buying baby plants!

The 'cut and come again' mixed lettuce seeds germinate and grow quickly and can be planted in a trough, my grandchildren used to like growing these.

Now that there is a good range from garden centres, buy a tray of something which takes your fancy. I have only just realized that there is no shame in taking this short cut.

We went for radishes. They won't be ready in time for the show but they are growing :)and the whole point of having a vegetables class is to get children growing vegetables. So that is a success in itself. More to the gardening than how many red cards you get.

Probably too late now Moonlight but I would have just wrapped them in a bit of damp kitchen roll & think leaving the leaves on would be the right idea as it shows they were homegrown with authentic 'nibbles'! Hope the girls enjoy/enjoyed the show.
