My daughter saw a bird on the peanut feeder this morning. It was black and white about the size of a starling and had bright red legs. She didn't have camera handy and I haven't a clue what it might have been. Any ideas?

I wonder if it was a spotted woodpecker and she mistook the red underneath it for red legs.

Bright red would be a good description of the greater spotted woodpecker.
I will take a pic of a bit of wood from a tree from which the top half fell down, partly owing to woodpeckers, and partly because it was dead. It is full of holes, some of which are about 6 in across at the mouth.

It was indeed a greater spotted woodpecker. I saw it myself this morning and confirmed what it was. Hopefully it will continue to call.
