I've just watched a very interesting programme about the history of the herb and spice trade which was presented by Kate Humble. This week's episode was about pepper and cinnamon. She visited the pepper plantations in India and the cinnamon plantations in Sri Lanka. I have never seen these plants growing or had any idea how the crop was harvested and produced. I learned that black pepper and white pepper are the same plant, but treated differently after cropping. I am looking forward to next week's episode. It is on BBC2.

I would watch it but Kate Humble is so full on and gushy I can't . I have seen spices growing in Goa we went to a spice garden it was really interesting, and I have more respect for the efforts that goes into a lot of the things we just take for granted.
