That is what I thought Steve. Am I correct in thinking it is not a native species?

I have never heard a cricket here, but I love the sound in Australia. There are a lot of varieties.

Unfortunately, if that is an alien species then it needs to be reported and killed.

There are lots of native species of crickets in this country, that one looks like maybe a dark bush cricket, I had one hop in the back kitchen at the old house, found the pic. here :- (Edit - probably a grasshopper ) Had grasshoppers in the old garden too:-

It definitely looks like some kind of bush cricket though, there are lots of native ones & they come in different colour forms & shapes, the one in your pic. looks like a male as it doesn't have a central ovipositor at the back. it could be a bog bush cricket if it's greenish underneath or a Roesel's bush cricket or lots of similar ones found in the U.K. Actually looking back at the first photo of the one in our old house I don't think that is a bush cricket at all now, it's more likely a small grasshopper, just guessed what it was & labelled the pic. wrong at the time!
