To be honest I wouldn't move a hedgehog unless it was out in daylight & looked injured or ill or if it was being attacked by something or if it was very tiny & underweight in November & unlikely to make it through hibernation. I've taken a couple of babies to the local animal santuary in November/December in the past as they've weighed less than 600g, they have to keep them indoors, warm & fed for the entire winter to stop them hibernating & release them around April after 'hardening' them off like we do plants! Here's a couple of pics. of the little one I took to the sanctuary in November 2012. Hedgehogs can walk about 2 miles a night & need gaps under gates, fences etc. to wander between gardens, if you don't see yours ladybird it will probably be off searching for food etc. in the area, they shouldn't be kept 'sealed' in one garden. If you're worried about the pond if you take the mesh off it you can always put something in which the hedgehog can climb out over, a small log or plantpots maybe. When we bought our new pond we specifically got one that has a wildlife escape route - it has a little stairway built in one end!

It seems we have a hedgehog back again this yea. I haven't seen it but Maureen has. One of the cats was checking it out the other day. next trick is to build a 'hedgehog home' for overwintering. I downloaded a plan off the internet but couldn't manage the sheet of marine ply into the car so will need to wait until trailer is empty. We did have a 'kennel' for one of the cats some time back but no hedgehog used it and it has since disintegrated. Also tried an old wheelbarrow upside down with room for a hedgehog to get under but no joy there either. Ungrateful pigs

I don`t have enough plywood left but I`ll think of something. I have left out nuts mealy worms and dried fruit for Sonic and it has been dissapearing at night . i spied him at it last night but did he run when I flashed the torch on him . I`m afraid to put out dog or cat food in case it attracts rats or it`s eaten by the many roaming cats we seen to have.
